Job description

As a robot lab assistant at VU, you support the research and education of the Department of Computer Science. We use several types of robots for research and education. We use several hardware platforms, such as Nao, Pepper, Thymio II, Robobo, Crazyflie 2.0 and custom-made evolvable robots. Our research groups currently work on developing software infrastructure and simulators:

SIC

which runs in a cloud, and

REVOLVE

. We also focus on supporting a cluster of powerful computers designated for simulation experiments.

You mainly work in our two robot labs, the Social AI Lab of the Social AI research group and the Bio-inspired Robotics Lab of the Computational Intelligence group.
The essence of your work is to aid development and maintenance of these hardware and software systems. We use our robots not only in the lab but also in field research at schools, hospitals, companies, etc. So you are also involved in the support and organizing the logistics of these research activities with robots.

Your duties

  • develop the software infrastructure in our labs, incl. coding, writing documentation and making tutorials
  • assist and provide support to students and researchers who work with our robots in their projects. We support you in becoming a robot expert
  • provide the necessary support and logistics for using the robot platforms in our robot labs for research and education (including Crazyflie 2.0, NAO, Pepper, Thymio II, Robobo, and the evolvable robots)

Requirements
  • a BSc or MSc degree in a relevant field, e.g. computer science or AI
  • strong software engineering and programming skills (C++, Python, Java). You are interested in expanding your software development skills
  • interest in working with robots
  • you are a team player and have a “student friendly” attitude. You can communicate well and provide support with problems students may have

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,960 (scale 10)

and a maximum €4,670 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. The job profile (Reseach and Education Technician profile O lv.2) is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year. After positive evaluation of functioning a permanent contract will be given.

About the AI Section
The AI section belongs to the Department of Computer Science. Much of the AI research within the department is embedded in the Network Institute of Vrije Universiteit, covering disciplines such as Social sciences, Humanities, and Economics. The Department also actively participates in Amsterdam Data Science, a collaboration between more than 600 data science researchers from different institutions in Amsterdam.
The department explicitly encourages inter- and cross- disciplinary research, and expects successful candidates to collaborate with colleagues in other fields of Computer Science, as well as with colleagues from other disciplines such as those participating in the Network Institute and in Amsterdam Data Science.
