Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated researcher who will perform live-cell microscopy experiments using cultured human neurons to test new treatments for brain disorders. 

Communication between neurons is an essential and tightly regulated process, which is altered in severe neurodevelopmental disorders. At the Functional Genomics department, we study neuronal communication in disease models of live human neurons using optimized optical tools and advanced live cell microscopy. We use these tools in collaborative projects with pharmaceutical companies to test new treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Your duties

  • work with cultured human neurons
  • perform confocal and live microscopy of fluorescent reporters
  • design and implement the latest optical tools for drug screening and scale up assays
  • advance analysis protocols by programming automated analysis routines of microscopy recordings
  • Report on experimental results and design follow up experiments

Requirements
  • M.Sc degree in Neurosciences or affiliated life sciences.
  • experience with cell culture and microscopy work
  • programming and data analysis skills (Matlab)
  • ability to work independently
  • strong oral and written communication skills in English

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,818 (scale 8)

and a maximum €4,670 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year, with the intention to extend, and can potentially lead to a PhD trajectory.

About the Functional Genomics Department
The functional genomics department of the VU (https://fga.cncr.nl/ ) consists of an enthusiastic, international team, working on a broad range of experimental projects; from molecular genetics to behavior analysis. We want to understand how our brain works and treat brain disorders as epilepsy or neurodevelopmental disorders. Together with the pharmaceutical industry we are testing new treatments, and you would be assisting in these collaborative projects.
