The research cluster Applied Nanophotonics (ANP), part of the MESA+ Institute in the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Twente, performs advanced nanophotonic research to control the propagation and emission of light in novel ways. It is an essential part of our multidisciplinary research to develop, use and maintain the sensitive optical setups in our laboratories. To this end we are recruiting a
Research Technician
The Technician develops and maintains the optical infrastructure in ANPs laboratories, in particular those in the Meander building (COPS, AQO, LPNO). The Technician assists and advises on setups that are used by junior researchers such as PhD, MSc, BSc students, and postdocs. You maintain the setups and the infrastructure, and ensure they are safely operated. You advise and assist the junior researchers on the design and assembly of optical setups including mechanics, mechatronics, electronics and computer control. You contribute to maintaining advanced instruments such as lasers or spectrometers. You are able to design and make custom-made components, to this end you may employ laser printing or mechanical machining, or advanced techniques together with the central UT workshops.
Information and application
For further info, please feel free to contact Mr. Cornelis Harteveld BSc (email: c.a.m.harteveld@utwente.nl or phone: +31 (0)53 489 2282), or Prof. Willem Vos (w.l.vos@utwente.nl or +31 (0)53 489 5388), or Pepijn Pinkse (p.w.h.pinkse@utwente.nl or +31 (0)53 489 5904).
Please send your CV (including list of grades) and motivation statement via the button before 28 February 2023.

About the department
Nanophotonics is a hot topic in science and technology where light is manipulated by nanostructures –as they are made in the MESA+ Nanolab – with feature sizes of typically between tens of nanometers to microns. In this regime unusual optical phenomena arise, that we study with the aim to applying them in novel devices in collaboration with industry. For instance, while light waves are scattered in opaque materials (such as paint, foam, tissue), ANP scientists have developed wave shaping techniques to make such opaque materials transparent and to obtain novel functionalities like high-resolution lenses or quantum secure authentication chips. An important topic are photonic integrated circuits, in which light is guided through dedicated chips, as the optical analogue to electronic ICs. The development of these circuits is accelerating, and they have a wide range of applications varying from ultrabroadband information transmission and control (e.g., “Sat-com”) to quantum information circuits. Much of our Nanophotonic research takes place in close collaboration with Dutch high-tech industries such as ASML, Demcon, Lionix, Lumileds, Signify (former Philips Lighting), TNO, and our own fast-growing start-up Quix Quantum.
About the organisation
The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
