Working environment

The research at the Molecular Cell Biology section of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS) at the UMC Groningen focusses on understanding basic functions and processes of the cell and how they lead to diseases if disturbed. The section strives for identification and, if possible, exploitation of targets to prevent or cure diseases related to protein misfolding, and to promote Healthy Ageing.

Job description

Many heritable and progressive neurodegenerative disorder, like Huntington’s Disease, are connected to the accumulation of misfolded or aggregated proteins. Preventing this toxic aggregation is seen as one of the options to delay or prevent the onset of this disease. Control of protein folding and preventing of aggregation is mediated by a cellular network of so-called molecular chaperones. We study ways to utilize the cellular quality control machinery to prevent toxic aggregation and delay the onset of disease. Your tasks will involve responsible independent research work, close cooperation with students and postdoctoral fellows and maintenance of shared research infrastructure with our team of technical staff members.
