Research Software Engineer in AI and Health

Are you challenged by creating robust software that can bring AI solutions to clinical practice? The Quantitative Healthcare Analysis group (qurAI) at the Informatics Institute (IvI) is looking for an ambitious research software engineer to join our growing team.

What are you going to do

In this position you are expected to work closely with researchers to develop infrastructure and applications to support their projects. In a collaboration with Radboud University Medical Center and Amazon Web Services we have developed an open-source MLOps platform for medical imaging, https://grand-challenge.org , that is deployed on public cloud and on premises. Your role at qurAI will be to further integrate this platform with the hospitals systems, and further develop it to meet the requirements of the qurAI researchers. In this position, you will be responsible for leading the local development and managing the full lifecycle of the Grand-Challenge platform as well as specific clinically-oriented workstations. This includes understanding user needs, creating requirements, developing the workstations, integrating research algorithms, automating tests, writing documentation, releasing, and supporting users. You will be also responsible to coordinate and co-supervise the software engineering work in both locations, Amsterdam and Nijmegen, as well as supporting qurAI researchers. You will be supervised by Clarisa Sanchez (UvA) and James Meakin (RadboudUMC).

Additionally, you will perform as ICT contact person and data steward within the Institute for a small percentage (10%) of your time. ICT contact persons form the bridge between the ICTS and groups within IvI in relation to services that we take from ICTS and is responsible for hardware inventory management. As a data steward, you will assist researchers in their assigned group in data management planning, data storage, and data reposition; and monitor the quantity and quality of research data management in the assigned groups.

What do you have to offer

Your experience and profile:

  • a degree in STEM or equivalent practical experience;
  • experience with developing software that is used by others, any experience developing scientific software or open-source software is a plus;
  • demonstrable experience of building software in Python;
  • knowledge of web technologies;
  • knowledge of dev-ops practices, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, data pipelines;
  • experience with integrating with 3rd party APIs;
  • practical experience with Django, VueJS, AWS services, Ansible and/or Docker;
  • an interest in medical imaging and an understanding of the research and data science process;
  • ambitions to lead an engineering team and be an advocate for best software development practises at qurAI.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 12 months. The preferred starting date is to be discussed. A permanent contract follows if we assess your performance positive.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3,974 to € 5,439 (scale 11). This does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile ICT Developer 2 is applicable. For this position we can not sponsor a visa. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

In qurAI we focus on the development and clinical implementation of socially responsible AI innovations in healthcare, so as to become an indispensable part of the Amsterdam ecosystem in the field of AI and healthcare.
