Job description
The function of this Research Officer is to support the scientific staff of the Department of Earth Sciences in experimental and laboratory-based biogeochemistry research by building a bridge between staff, students, and laboratory personnel. Tasks for this position will include but are not limited to:
  • assisting BSc, MSc and starting PhD students to develop and start new experimental set-ups;
  • instructing BSc and MSc (and, if needed, starting PhD) students how to perform first order data quality checks, how to treat data statistically, how to plot/visualize data in a scientifically meaningful way, and how to store data and sample material at the end of a project;
  • assist in laboratory practicals within our BSc and MSc educational programs;
  • potentially also help with (preparations for) field/sea-going campaigns.

Qualifications
You have:
  • background knowledge (a PhD is optional) in environmental sciences, earth sciences, environmental mineralogy, (environmental) chemistry or material sciences;
  • experience in independently conducting laboratory-based experiments and/or chemical analyses as well as data processing and evaluation;
  • experience with supporting, instructing and assisting students and starting PHD’s with gaining the needed experimental and laboratory-bases skills;
  • a critical, open, and interdisciplinary approach in scientific experiments and analyses;
  • strong teamwork affinity to work in a diverse environment of scientists and students;
  • excellent written and spoken English skills, as well as good general communicational skills.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (0.8-1.0 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. Permanent employment will be offered based upon good performance, according to the Faculty’s performance indicators, after one year. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,098 and €4,257 (scale 9.0 – 10.9  according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
