Offer Description

Healthy ageing is under pressure because extension of paid working lives is not feasible for a substantial group of workers. The overall aim of the Healthpath project is to explain why some workers experience healthier pathways to retirement than others. Healthpath is an interdisciplinary mixed-method project, funded by a ZonMW Open Competition grant, combining quantitative and qualitative research.

Healthpath will address the following two key objectives 1); To investigate how individual vulnerabilities and the organizational (employer & sectoral) context interact as determinants of HPTR of older workers. 2); To identify barriers and facilitators of implementing sector-based and employer-based policies and practices to support HPTR of individual workers.

By using an interdisciplinary approach, we combine methods, theory and data from epidemiology, sociology and occupational health to understand why some workers do and others do not have a healthy pathway to retirement. Specific attention will be paid to interactions between characteristics of sectors, employers and workers.

We are looking for a PhD candidate in Healthpath to contribute to a new longitudinal study that will be set up specifically for the project. You will support the data collection and analysis of longitudinal data to investigate interactions between individual worker characteristics and characteristics of collective labour agreements and how these influence healthy pathways to retirement. During the first phases of the project, you will collaborate closely with a postdoc and the broader Healthpath team to design an excellent lonitudinal study that will be used further throughout the project. The data from this study will provide the backbone for a PhD project. You will perform longitudinal data analyses to investigate healthy pathways to retirement and will report about the results in international scientific journals and during international conferences.

As part of your development as a researcher, you will contribute to teaching students at VU and/or UvA (5%).

The period of your appointment for doctoral research is four years.
