Project Manager Toxicology / Virtual Human Platform for Safety Assessment (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)

Job description As Project Manager at the Toxicology division of the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS, Department Population Health Sciences) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine you will play a crucial role in supporting our research. The Toxicology division at IRAS is a world-leading group in research and teaching in neuro, endocrine and immunotoxicology and exposure assessment. We are looking for an enthusiastic, independent and creative Project Manager to strengthen our team.
Recently several grant applications have been awarded in the Toxicology division, including the 'Virtual Human Platform for Safety Assessment' project (VHP4Safety ), which will be the main focus of your work. VHP4Safety aims to improve the prediction of the potential harmful effects of chemicals and pharmaceuticals on human health, by accelerating the transition from animal-based testing to innovative safety assessment based on human data and human models. This large, interdisciplinary project runs from June 2021 to June 2026 and is part of the Dutch Research Agenda programme, with a budget of over 10 million Euros funding from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The project consortium is made up of 33 partners with diverse expertise including toxicology, medicine, regulation, data sciences and social sciences, from academia, private and public sector organizations. The Project Manager forms an integral part of the coordination team of the project. In addition to VHP4Safety, you will also be involved in the management of selected European and national projects, coordinated by the division, including the H2020 project GOLIATH .
As our Project Manager, you will manage the administrative processes of projects coordinated by the division. These processes include (financial) planning and reporting, monitoring and control, contract management and compliance, archive management, and project meeting organization. You will work closely with our faculty's Research Support Office, and with the Office of the Strategic Theme Life Sciences, and serve as the main point of contact for our partners and funding agencies. Communication and organization play a big role in your job; you will help develop and execute project internal and external communication strategies, together with our faculty's Communication Department. Scoping new funding initiatives and supporting the preparation of new grant applications is also part of your work.

Qualifications We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative team player who knows what it takes to do world class, interdisciplinary research and who enjoys facilitating research and taking initiative. Someone who is stress-proof, flexible and proactive. Someone with an eye for the work to be done and who goes for it.
  • You have a background in life sciences. A PhD is a big plus. Affinity with the field of alternatives to animal testing is also a plus.
  • You enjoy working in a dynamic, innovative, and high-pressure environment.
  • You are capable of monitoring project progress and acting on it.
  • You work independently, proactively and have a high sense of responsibility.
  • You are flexible and have good analytical and organizational skills.
  • You can communicate well verbally and in writing, both in English and in Dutch.
  • You work well in a team. You can appreciate feedback from others and you are able to take the lead in specific activities.
  • Experience with large scale (inter)national projects and business development is a plus.


We offer a position (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) for a period of one year. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is a possibility. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,807 and €5,922 (scale 11-12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
