Job description

TU Delft, Aardyn, Shell and EBN are taking an important step forward in the energy transition and are installing a geothermal source on the TU Delft campus. This source provides both the campus and a number of neighbourhoods in Delft with sustainable heat. A unique project in which a sustainable geothermal source is exploited on the TU Delft campus and at the same time is linked to a major scientific research program at the university.

One of the main objectives of the well is to carry out a detailed site specific characterisation on the geological history and heterogeneities within the subsurface. In order to achieve this, cores will be taken at several depth intervals during the drilling of the injector and producer of the geothermal source.

We are looking for an experienced geologist that will support the science team during implementation of the geothermal source. You will be embedded in the TU Delft team responsible for the scientific components of the geothermal source in the Department of Geoscience & Engineering. You will work in close cooperation with technicians, the core science team and especially the geological expert of the science team.

The project-based geologist will be overseeing and analysing the drilling and coring activities and data of the geothermal well during operations and both document and communicate the progress and data to the science team and the operator's well-site geologist. During and after operations you will be leading the archiving of geological data and samples, start the analysis such to feed the reservoir geologic model needed for performance analysis.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the drilling activities (incl. night shifts) – taking operational decisions, within an agreed framework of responsibility.
  • Supervise and communicate with junior geologic staff filling 24/7 schedules
  • Interpret drilling data (logs, cuttings) as input into building stratigraphy such to start and stop coring, based on well offsets and developing decision tree of how to proceed during execution.
  • Supervise labelling and handling of cores and samples and first processing of cores.
  • Managing the core and sample storage physically and digital archiving
  • Setting up a framework for researchers and others to access the cores
  • Analysis of cores and cuttings in concert with log data for lithostratigraphic analysis as feed for the reservoir modelling.
  • Processing of data, and collaborating with data manager on ensuring data is preserved and processes for future (re-)use.
