Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: ;

The research schools Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA ), Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH ) and Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC ) currently have two vacant Postdoc researcher positions in collaboration with the department of Dutch at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Amsterdam. ASCA; ASH and ACLC are among the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research .

Dutch language and culture are changing constantly, adapting to globalization, digitization and increasing societal, linguistic and cultural diversity. The department of Dutch studies at the Faculty of Humanities at the UvA considers it of the utmost importance to investigate these changes and to integrate them in its research and teaching programs. In order to stimulate research into 1) postcolonial and decolonial perspectives on Dutch language and culture and 2) literacy in Dutch language and culture, two postdoc positions are vacant per 1 September 2022. The postdoctoral researchers will be embedded in the department of Dutch and in ASCA, ASH or ACLC.

What are you going to do

In order to stimulate research into recent developments in the Dutch language and culture, researchers with a Ph.D. are invited to carry out a research project in one of the following thematic areas:

  • Postcolonial and decolonial perspectives on Dutch language and culture. This theme explores historical and/or current perspectives on knowledge acquisition and knowledge practices in the context of theories on (post/de)coloniality; intersectionality; diversity and/or inclusion.
  • Literacy in Dutch language and culture. This theme focuses on questions such as inequal access to (digital) information; the ability to process (digital) information; the role of literacy in culture (e.g. written versus oral culture); and the increase in low literacy among adolescents and adults.
  • The research projects will connect to the teaching programs at the UvA that involve Dutch language and culture (BA NTC ; MA Neerlandistiek ). These aim to incorporate societally relevant questions in their courses, and approach literature, linguistics and argumentation and communication in an inter- and multidisciplinary way. The research projects of the two postdocs should be interdisciplinary and should preferably connect to two of the three research schools (ASCA; ASH; ACLC).

    Procedure Open Call:

    Motivated researchers are encouraged to submit a research proposal of 800-1000 words discussing the project’s aim; its time path; the expected output (for example articles) and its interdisciplinarity (its connection with the research agendas of preferably two of the three identified research schools). It is advisable to indicate in your project proposal with which staff members in the department of Dutch or the research schools you would like to collaborate. In writing the proposal, please take into account that if you are invited to carry out your research project, you will have a budget for conference visits and a research assistant.

    The department of Dutch strives to create an inclusive working environment in which diversity in the cultural and academic backgrounds of its staff members is respected and valued. In addition to researchers specialized in Dutch language and culture, researchers from other disciplines focusing on Dutch language and culture are strongly encouraged to submit a proposal.

    Your tasks and responsibilities:

    • conducting independent research on one of the identified themes (postcolonial/decolonial perspectives on Dutch language and culture; and literacy in Dutch language and culture), resulting in academic publications in (inter)national journals, and/or books;
    • participating in (inter)national conferences;
    • participating in activities of the research schools and department;
    • (co-)organising knowledge dissemination activities;
    • possibly: contributing to teaching courses (by means of an expansion of your contract).

    Your experience and profile:

    • a PhD in a relevant area;
    • a track record of publishing in well-regarded (inter)national journals or books;
    • experience presenting your research at (inter)national conferences;
    • good social, communicative and organisational skills;
    • enthusiasm for/affinity with communicating academic research to non-academic audiences;
    • experience with or a demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary research.

    The Postdoc researcher will be appointed at the department of Dutch of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam and will conduct the research project within the research school ASCA; ASH or ACLC. The employment contract will be for one year. Contingent on a positive performance evaluation the contract will be extended with 1 year. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours (0,8fte) a week. Your contract can be expanded to 38 hours a week (fulltime) if you carry out teaching tasks. The preferred starting date is preferably before 31 December 2022.
