Integrative Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience (IMCN) Research Group within the Brain & Cognition department at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a postdoctoral researcher on the topic of decision-making mechanisms of deep brain networks.
The IMCN Research Group aims to bridge the gap between neuroscience and cognition. Members of the IMCN have a range of skills from neuroanatomy and neurochemistry, to mathematical psychological modelling.
What are you going to do
The research will focus on Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience and mathematical modelling of cognitive processes that underpin decision making, ranging across cognitive, motor and limbic domains. Further, the research should aim to link such process models to specific subcortical structures, through collaboration with fellow researchers.
You will/tasks:
- Develop new connectivity analyses of brain networks;
- Create joint models of multiple tasks and across multiple modalities with a strong focus on the Thalamus;
- You will supervise BA and MA students within the Brain & Cognition department including some teaching.
What do we require
The researcher will develop modelling codes of brain network analyses, and will have primary responsibility for at least one specific field of interest. The researcher will contribute to other theoretical components of the project, including the analysis of results, development of new ideas, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. The researcher will be also involved in assisting with supervision of graduate students.
Your experience and profile:
- A PhD in Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience or similar;
- A strong record of computer programming, specifically in process modelling;
- Working knowledge of Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience, mathematical psychology, cognitive psychology, anatomy of the human subcortex and ethical experimental practise;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic life and, administrative tasks;
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of an effective team.
Our offer
We offer a temporary full-time or part-time contract for the period of 2 years. Preferred starting date is 1st of September 2023. Upon positive evaluation and satisfactory performance, you will be offered an extension/a permanent contract.

What else do we offer
- A position in which initiative and input are strongly appreciated;
- An enthusiastic and specialized team, that is looking for new colleagues;
- An inspiring academic and international work environment in the centre of Amsterdam.
About us
In our research unit, we use an Integrative Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience approach to gain a mechanistic understanding of cognitive processes such as decision-making and how they are implemented in the brain. We combine knowledge from functional and structural neuroanatomy, mathematical/computational modeling, and the cognitive/clinical neurosciences. Click here for more details.
