Postdoctoral Researcher on Pathways to Sustainability in Education (1.0 FTE)

Functie
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to participate in our project "Furthering Sustainability Education at Utrecht University". Society is facing grand challenges like a changing climate, declining biodiversity and feeding the world's population. To address these challenges there is an aim for interdisciplinary collaboration and transdisciplinary interaction with society. Preparing students to become professionals that are able to cope in this context in all areas of society is an important role of universities. Many initiatives have already been taken in this regard. Interdisciplinary programmes have for example been set up, and new educational methodologies like challenge-based learning and community-engaged learning have been explored and implemented.
In this postdoc project, you will focus on how to embed 'sustainability' as a meaningful theme in the educational programmes of Utrecht University (UU). For this, you will study the relevant literature and examples within and beyond Utrecht University. You will study what the most effective models of sustainability education are and you will develop and administer a large-scale questionnaire to identify opportunities and obstacles that are specific to UU. This results in a clear plan to help and support programmes.
You will be embedded in the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, and work closely together with the Sustainability Education and Engagement (SEE) community of the UU strategic theme Pathways to Sustainability (PtS). Next to scientific publications, you will disseminate your findings regularly at meetings of the SEE and PtS community and beyond, and map the current initiatives related to sustainability education at UU to showcase these initiatives in a central location on the UU website. You will also advise SEE, based on your findings, on how best to proceed in achieving UU's ambitions on sustainability in education.

We encourage applications from candidates who bring multiple of the following qualifications:
  • You hold a PhD in Educational Sciences or related sciences (Psychology, Pedagogy) and have proven affinity with sustainability education or you hold a PhD in the field of sustainability science and have proven affinity with educational sciences.

  • You have affinity with working in an interdisciplinary academic environment.
  • You have experience with administering large-scale surveys.

We offer:

  • a position (1.0 FTE) until 31 December 2025. In case of good performance and if the project funding is continued, the contract can be extended by a year.
