Do you want to develop novel ways that promote human-wildlife coexistence? And team up with institutions with a broad range of societal stakeholders? If so, you have a part to play! We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher that will critically and systematically analyse current Dutch wildlife management. This is your chance to make a significant impact!

The Netherlands experience a major comeback of several large mammal species. While some celebrate this comeback, others emphasise negative human-wildlife interactions. The wildlife comeback thus creates an uncertain future for human-wildlife relations. WildlifeNL is a new 8-year programme in which several knowledge institutions team up with a broad range of societal stakeholders to develop novel ways to promote human-wildlife coexistence. 
To promote novel ways for human-wildlife coexistence, WildlifeNL aims to develop an innovative interspecies communication approach to wildlife management. WildlifeNL combines insights from social science, philosophy, behavioural ecology and engineering to develop new technologies, governance arrangements and communication strategies to steer human-wildlife behaviours. In this 3-year postdoctoral researcher position, you will focus on establishing a transdisciplinary environment for addressing the challenges related to the Dutch Wildlife Comeback and identify potential leverage points for transformation towards human-wildlife coexistence. You will first review different wildlife management models across the world, with a specific emphasis on adaptive wildlife management in Sweden, and synthesise lessons for the Dutch context. Second, you will analyse and describe if consortium members, and key external stakeholders, desire change in Dutch wildlife management and, if so, what this desired change entails. In a transdisciplinary setting, you will then conceptualise and critically analyse human-wildlife interactions and the current wildlife management system according to the leverage points framework in order to identify challenges and opportunities in Dutch wildlife management.
Last, you will synthesise this knowledge to identify potential leverage points to transform wildlife management in the Netherlands. Based on the identified leverage points, WildlifeNL will co-design ideas for novel interventions to be tested in the following years. You will work in a consortium of different knowledge institutions and other societal stakeholders. This means that, in addition to your work at Radboud University, you will also spend significant periods of time at some of the other consortium members, such as Utrecht University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
  • You should hold a PhD in human-wildlife interactions, natural resource management or a related field.
  • You have experience with working in an interdisciplinary scientific setting.
  • You have experience with the social sciences.
  • You are a systems thinker and have experience with analysing complex social-ecological systems.
  • You have experience with working in a transdisciplinary setting with different types of stakeholders.
  • A basic understanding of the Dutch language is required.
  • You should have affinity and ideally experience with human-wildlife coexistence.
  • You are a strong team player, flexible and able to deal with potentially tense, stressful circumstances.

You will be part of the Institute for Science in Society (ISiS) at Radboud University in Nijmegen. ISiS is an interdisciplinary research institute within the Faculty of Science , which aims to promote social and philosophical reflection on science through dialogue and cooperation between the faculty's various research institutes. The institute's mission is to analyse, assess and improve the social embedding of new developments in science and technology through research, education and outreach, and to understand how society shapes science and vice versa.

We offer
  • It concerns an employment for 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €2,960 and a maximum of €4,670 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 10 ).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  •  It concerns a temporary employment for 2 years with the intention to extend for 1 more year.
