The Department of Anthropology is looking for a postdoctoral researcher who will participate in the NWA funded consortium programme entitled "Re/Presenting Europe: Popular Representations of Diversity and Belonging". The researcher is expected to conduct multi-sited fieldwork on the emancipatory knowledge-practices developed by the historically 'blackened peoples' in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Hexagon and its overseas departments and communes in the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom and its British Overseas Territories in the West Indies. The position is embedded in the research programme group Exploring Diversity: critical ethnographies of belonging and exclusion of the Anthropology Department of the University of Amsterdam. What are you going to do

As postdoctoral researcher you will study the way communities politically Black and/or colonially ascribed as black people have generated cultures of liberatory joy that perpetually disrupt the work of racism and racecraft. Based on the study in the aforementioned locales, you will contribute to transversal theoretisations of "Blackness" as an nonessential concept of analysis.

You will:

  • participate in the research cluster "Braided Solidarities" within the NWA project Re/Presenting Europe: Popular Representations of Diversity and Belonging".
  • engage with the other researchers who are part of the consortium;
  • conduct multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork;
  • co-organize academic seminars and outreach workshops for the project;
  • write two peer reviewed academic articles;
  • contribute to the supervision of the PhD candidates in the project;
  • represent the Exploring Diversity Research programme group outside the UvA.
