We are looking for

Applications are invited for a 14-month postdoctoral researcher position for optical detection of methane. This position will be embedded in the Institute for Molecules and Materials.

You are a postdoctoral researcher with the necessary technical background to perform research gas sensing, particularly targeting volatiles in exhaled breath such as methane and hydrogen cyanide, using optical schemes. This work may involve collaboration with Alpes Lasers (Neuchatel, Switzerland) and Argos Med, Karlsruhe (Germany). Your responsibilities and tasks will include (1) implementing and testing several optical configurations (e.g. based on laser-spectroscopy) for miniaturised systems (i.e. lab-on-a-chip), starting with existing schemes; (2) testing and validating the breath analyser developed by Argos Med. Merely expertise in using commercial sensors is not sufficient.


We ask
  • PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience of (laser) spectroscopy, preferably in gas sensing, miniaturised and integrated sensing systems (lab-on-a chip, PIC technology), lock-in techniques, sensor acquisition programming (e.g. signal processing, data acquisition, etc.).
  • Programming skills (MatLab, Lab View).
  • A team player who enjoys working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Good communication and organisation skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.

We are

The position is within the Exhaled Biomarkers and Exposure group at the Department of Molecular and Laser Physics of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM), Faculty of Science . We focus on monitoring real-time signatures of metabolic processes in the human body reflected in exhaled breath and unravelling their mechanisms of action. To this end, we are developing and using laser-based spectroscopy systems for targeted volatile compounds and apply mass spectrometry for both targeted and untargeted compounds. This postdoctoral research project will give you the opportunity to contact a broad network across a wide variety of technologies, thereby providing a broad interdisciplinary experience within a collaborative academic, governmental and commercial environment. The project called H2020-SFS-2018-2020, 'Fact-based personalised nutrition for the young - Nutrishield', is such an environment. NUTRISHIELD aims at creating a personalised platform for the young. The platform will consist of novel methods and techniques, which analyse a wide range of biomarkers related to nutrition and health disorders of children.

We offer
  • Employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of € 2,790 and a maximum of € 4,402 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 10 ).
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: 14 months.
  • The intended start date is 1 September 2021.
