Offer Description

In environmental life cycle assessment, life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) models are used to estimate environmental impact due to emissions and resource extractions. To identify and analyse applicable factors that express the ecosystem or human health impact due to a specific substance emission, cause-effect modelling is applied. The resulting so-called characterisation factors are determined by modelling the fate as well as the effects in the environment. Frequently, methods from risk assessment are used for this.

For an update on the worldwide used LCIA methodology ReCiPe , we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the cause-effect modelling of various impacts, such as microplastics, eutrophication and biodiversity effect modelling. Modelling methods include uncertainty quantification and might involve integration of other methods in LCIA, such as risk assessment. You will need to develop new methods to address the fate and effect modelling, as well as uncertainty modelling. The methods will build on the latest scientific insights and be specifically tailored to the needs of potential users such as regulators and industry. Moreover, you will need to make sure the factors for a multitude of impact categories are aligned and ready to be applied by practitioners. You will work together with environmental scientists from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM ). As a postdoctoral researcher you will be expected to play an active role in our educational programmes, particularly by participation in Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in modelling, circularity and sustainability, and in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in their thesis research projects.
