Job description
Are you interested in using cutting-edge methods to study the role of diplomats in foreign policy and responses to international crises? In the 'Diplomats in the Field' project, we aim to uncover the hidden role of field-level diplomats through qualitative research and large-scale surveys and survey experiments. As a postdoctoral researcher on this project, you will be tasked with designing and implementing the experimental portion of the project.
The 'Diplomats in the Field' project aims to understand the behaviour and influence of field-level diplomats through large-scale surveys and survey experiments. Specifically, we will examine (1) how field-level diplomats influence the policies and strategies of states and multilateral organisations; (2) how the influence of field-level diplomats varies across different types of foreign policy organisations; and (3) how individual and career motivations affect the actions and behaviours of field-level diplomats.
The research position is for two years and does not carry any teaching load. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be expected to contribute to the design of the survey and survey experiments, lead data collection and analysis, and to co-author academic articles related to the project. In addition, you may be asked to contribute to policy briefs and/or workshops presenting the data to policy audiences.
For this project, you will work under the supervision of Dr Haley Swedlund (CICAM/Political Science) and Dr Jana Vyrastekova (Economics). The position is based at the Department of Political Science. In addition, you will be able to benefit from the work of the research group of experimental economists at the Economics Department and a growing team of graduate students and staff working on organisational politics and international relations, supervised by Dr Haley Swedlund.
