The successful candidate will join Prof. Dr. Erwin de Blok’s ERC Advanced Grant MeerGas group at ASTRON that is focused on acquiring, reducing and analyzing the MeerKAT MHONGOOSE radio survey data. You will explore novel techniques to explore this unique MeerKAT data set of ultra-deep neutral hydrogen radio observations of nearby galaxies and you will lead one of the science projects within the survey with the ultimate goal to determine the nature of cold gas accretion in galaxies. You will collaborate with the MHONGOOSE survey team, consisting of many international experts on spectral-line and multi-wavelength observations. The position will be based at ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy.
Job requirements:
- A PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related discipline;
- A solid background in radio astronomy spectral line imaging;
- Experience with software for radio astronomy;
- Solid publication experience in refereed scientific journals;
- Good planning and organizational skills;
- Very good communications skills in English;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
We offer:
- A full-time (38 hours/week) temporary appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of two years which will be extended for a total duration of three years (2+1) based on good performance and funding availability.
- A gross monthly salary, on a full-time basis, in the range of €3.241,- to €4.679,-, depending on relevant experience.
- A holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.33% of the gross annual salary.
