Postdoctoral Position in Chemometrics for Multidimensional Separations

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: ;

Analytical methods and instruments are indispensable for modern society. For example, in the fields of materials, forensics, biopharma and energy.

The main goal of the PARADISE project (“Propelling Analysts by Removing Analytical, Data, Instrument and Sample-related Encumbrances”) is to develop robust, automated methodologies that provide accurate information on essential properties (“dimensions”) of complex industrial samples, their constituents and derivatives obtained through reactions. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Covestro, DSM, Genentech, Shell, the Netherlands Forensics Institute (NFI) and The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) are sponsors.

Within this large project we are seeking a Postdoctoral researcher who will focus on the development of chemometric methods to optimize (multi-)dimensional separations and (reaction) modulators used within liquid-phase separations, as well as algorithms for information extraction from higher-order data of polymer separations.

You will be appointed at the University of Amsterdam.

Requirements

You have obtained a PhD in 2017 or later, have good programming skills and specialist knowledge on either data analysis of multi-dimensional (polymeric) separations, or computational optimization of separations, or both. Experience with machine learning techniques is appreciated. Candidates who expect to obtain their PhD in the first half of 2023 may also apply.

In the application letter, please specify how you expect to contribute to the PARADISE project.

Ability to function within and contribute to an international research team is required. You must also be willing to collaborate with industrial partners, with PhD candidates and Postdoctoral researchers in related research projects, and with other research groups within and outside The Netherlands. Your communication skills in oral and written English are good.

Offer

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting on February 1, 2023, for the duration of 36 months. Initially, we will appoint you on a temporary basis for 12 months. We offer you subsequently an extension of the employment contract of 24 months if we assess your performance positively.

Based on a full-time contract (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from € 2,960,- to € 4,670,- (scale 10), depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.

What else do we offer

  • a function in which initiative is strongly valued;
  • an enthusiastic team that welcomes new members;
  • an inspiring academic and international environment in the heart of Amsterdam.

About us

The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science (FNWI). HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organized into four themes: Analytical Chemistry , Computational Chemistry , Synthesis & Catalysis and Molecular Photonics .

The Analytical Chemistry Group focuses on the development of new or greatly improved techniques or methods for the analysis of complex mixtures. The technical focus is on one- and two-dimensional separation methods, on hyphenation with detection and sample-preparation systems and on chemometric techniques for data handling and optimization. The application focus is on macromolecules, forensic science and a variety of other fields.

To work at the University of Amsterdam is to work in a discerning, independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterized by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society. Here you can read more about working at the University of Amsterdam .
