Job description

Research background

Our research focuses on developing liquid crystal elastomers for soft robotic applications. One of the key applications of liquid crystal elastomers in soft robotics is in the development of flexible, soft actuators. These actuators can be used to drive the movement of robots, enabling them to change their shape and size in response to external stimuli. Additionally, liquid crystal elastomers can be used in the development of soft sensors, which can detect changes in their environment and respond accordingly.

To achieve this, a combination of simulation, modeling, and experimentation to understand the underlying mechanics and behavior of these materials.

Projects description

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our team as a Finite Element Modeler with a focus on soft elastic materials, particularly liquid crystal elastomers. The ideal candidate will have expertise in numerical modeling and simulations, as well as a strong understanding of the mechanical behavior of soft elastic materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement finite element models to simulate the mechanical behavior of liquid crystal elastomers and other soft elastic materials
  • Conduct simulations and analyze results to support research and development projects
  • Collaborate with the research team to design and execute experiments to validate models and simulations
  • Present research findings at internal and external conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals

Job requirements
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong background in numerical modeling and simulations, especially in finite element analysis
  • Experience with liquid crystal elastomers or other soft elastic materials is a plus
  • Excellent programming skills in MATLAB or other numerical analysis software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
