Are you a highly motivated researcher with a passion for how we govern the use of our marine environment? Then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! We offer a chance to contribute to the restoration of the deep-sea by developing Restoration Governance Arrangements and enhancing the capacity of actors involved.

The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a Postdoc researcher to manage and conduct research through the Horizon Europe REDRESS project ‘Restoration of Deep-sea habitats to Rebuild European Seas’. You will specifically be responsible for conducting independent research that will identify the enabling and constraining conditions to develop deep-sea restoration policies (based on the analysis of different (active and passive) deep-sea restoration cases (cold-water corals, deep water sponges) in different European seas, to enhance institutional capacity building of actors involved in deep-sea restoration activities and to map deep-sea restoration industries in a socio-economic and governance perspective.

REDRESS is an Horizon Europe project aiming to provide a key contribution to the EU commitments towards restoring degraded ecosystems, especially in the deep sea. REDRESS brings together a large inter- and multi-disciplinary consortium of 27 partners with skills in marine restoration ecology, marine biology, marine spatial planning, modelling, computer and data science, marine technologies, economy, governance, socio-economics and human sciences with special attention on knowledge transfer, dissemination and communication.

The postdoc will be supervised by senior researchers of ENP (Jan van Tatenhove and Marloes Kraan) and will work together with researchers of partners involved in the governance and economic workpackages. The position is for a duration of 4 years (0.8 FTE).


Requirements
Specific Requirements

The ideal candidate has:

  • A PhD in sociology, anthropology, political sciences, governance studies, human geography.
  • Experience in conducting empirical research in a multi-sector or actor setting;
  • Experience with qualitative research design and methods;
  • Demonstrated interest or ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment;
  • Excellent academic level written and oral skills in English; Dutch language skills are highly desirable;
  • A demonstrated interest in marine governance and/or marine restoration will be considered favourably;
  • Experience in project administration is desirable.

For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level . Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. More information can be found here .

We offer a temporary contract for 4 years for 0.8 FTE which will be extended for another 3 years after a positive evaluation.
