Job description
We are seeking to hire a highly motivated, driven, and talented postdoc researcher/research engineer for tool development on the basis of work within the NLP team at the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. The job is offered for 11 or 12 months, depending on the starting date.
This position affords the opportunity to work with an excellent research team, and to convert research output into accessible tools (open-source software, web-based applications, or other). As such, the ideal candidate will have a good background in natural language processing/computational linguistics, as well as a genuine interest in communication of research results, research accessibility and dissemination.
In this project, you will translate existing systems into open-source web-based applications that demonstrate key aspects of the work by the NLP team. The NLP team includes researchers from the Language, Logic and Information research group at the ILS/UiL OTS.
Tasks:
  • 75% of the job: developing software tools (including open source tools and web interfaces) on the basis of recent research, coordinating expert meetings for the project group and taking part in them;
  • 25% of the job: work on your own research.

Qualifications
  • a PhD (or less preferred, an MSc) degree in natural language processing, in hand by the starting date. Graduates in Computer Science with demonstratable interest in languages and solid experience with language technology/NLP may also be considered;
  • demonstrable excellent programming and web development skills;
  • knowledge of machine learning and deep learning would be a plus;
  • high proficiency in academic English;
  • ability to meet deadlines;
  • readiness to learn new research methods;
  • ability to work both as an independent researcher and as a team member in an interdisciplinary team;
  • strong organizational, social and communication skills.

Offer
We offer a temporary position (0.8 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,703 and €3,974 (scale 10.5-11.0 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.

From 1 January 2023, the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS) will have a new name: Institute for Language Sciences (ILS). Other research groups at the ILS focus on Language Acquisition, Processing and Disorders, Language Variation, Language and Education, Language and Communication.
The Department of Languages, Literature and Communication offers BA and MA programmes in literary studies, linguistics, communication studies, translation, as well as Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and (uniquely in the Netherlands) Celtic languages.
The research for this Postdoc/Research engineer position is conducted within the Language, Logic and Information (LLI) group of the Institute for Language Sciences (ILS) and will be carried out together with researchers in this team, including Prof. Yoad Winter, Dr. Rick Nouwen, Dr. Tejaswini Deoskar, Dr. Frans Adriaans, among others. With its research and education in these fields, the faculty aims to contribute to a better understanding of the Netherlands and Europe in a rapidly changing social and cultural context.
