Postdoc position in Computer Science & Electrical Engineering

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 02 Dec 2021

Our research goal is to exploit light for communication and sensing.

For almost a century, radio frequency has monopolized wireless communication, and more recently sensing. But it is time for light to make a comeback. Light was the first means to achieve long range communication (e.g. fire towers and mirrors) and with recent advances in smart materials and optics we want it to be a pervasive means to communicate and sense in future smart cities. A few of the exciting projects that we are currently working on are: (1) To provide navigation services to drones only with light bulbs, without using cameras, GPS or radios of any type, (2) To transform lights into Internet of Thing devices for human-computer interaction, any LED can be converted into a wireless transmitter without disrupting its main purpose for illumination, (3) To exploit sunlight for wireless communication, we are controlling the level of transparency of window panels so they can transmit data to a smartphone or laptop, without causing any disturbances to users.

You will be part of team formed by PhD and Master students working jointly to create a radically different infrastructure: one that relies solely on light and operates in a sustainable manner. At the core of our systems are the use of MEMS and smart materials that can control the amount of light passing through them (similar to using a mirror to change light reflection patterns). We are building novel hardware, analytical frameworks and systems. The ultimate goal is to transform the 'passive' lights and 'dead' surfaces in our cities and buildings into wireless transmitters and sensors.

We are looking for candidates that are aiming at faculty positions or research labs and would like to take the Postdoc position as a means to strengthen their publishing, technical and advising skills. Our group publishes at visible venues in our areas such as Mobicom, SenSys, IPSN, Percom and Infoco
