Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Distributed and Interactive Systems research group for a talented

Postdoc,

on the subject of User Experience and Interaction Design for XR applications (design, development and evaluation).

Job description

The group is looking for a talented and motivated postdoc with an interest on extended reality (XR) technologies. The candidate will collaborate with a team of researchers and scientists in the context of a new Horizon Europe project, VOX: “Voice drive interaction in XR Spaces”. They should be ready to get their hands dirty and understand the importance of team work.

VOX is an ambitious project whose goal will be to facilitate and exploit the convergence of two important technologies, natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV). The goal of the project is to deliver large-scale pretrained AI models, either multilingual or combining language and vision, and develop the necessary toolkit that will allow their users to customize them for different tasks and deployment conditions. VOX will demonstrate the novel interfaces and experiences made possible by these models in three pivotal use cases, with the first being the next-generation personal assistants using multimodal information. The latter two, theater and virtual conferencing, will support sectors hurt by the pandemic, with new opportunities to engage and retain customers.

The candidate will be in charge of defining user requirements, supporting the design and conduction of user tests to evaluate the technology developed in the project, and defining and conducting the analysis of the outcomes of the user tests, following a human-centric methodology.

We expect candidates with proven knowledge on at least one of the following areas: extended Reality technologies, human-computer interaction, user experience; and with publications in relevant conferences (e.g., ACM CHI, IEEE VR) and journals.

Requirements

Candidates are required to have a completed PhD in the area of Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Industrial Design or a related disciplines, with expertise on human computer interaction or related fields. Needed qualifications for candidates include proven research talent and good academic writing and presentation skills. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English.

About Research group

The Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group focuses on modeling and controlling complex collections of media objects (including real-time media and sensor data) that are interactive and distributed in time and space. The research group focuses on facilitating and improving the way people use interactive systems and how people communicate with each other, by combining data science with a strong human-centric, approach to understand user experience. This enables the group to design and develop next generation intelligent, empathic systems. https://www.dis.cwi.nlhttps://www.cwi.nl/research/groups/distributed-and-interactive-systems
