Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Human-Centered Data Analytics research group for a talented
Postdoc,
on the subject of Diverse and Inclusive AI for the Media Sector.
Job description
How do we design, develop and evaluate human-centered AI applications for the media sector, and how do we ensure that these systems align with the goal to be diverse, inclusive and/or transparent? In this project we will translate goals and values embodied in media organisations into concrete metrics for the assessment and optimization of AI applications. We strive for a human-centered development approach by taking into account the long term effect of AI applications on various stakeholders, such as end-users, media content producers and media organisations.
The position is part of the new AI, Media and Democracy Lab, an interdisciplinary lab that brings together AI researchers, Communication Scientists, Information Law scholars and media organisations. The project will start with a collaboration with one of the media partners of the Lab, the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, a leading knowledge institute in the field of media culture and archiving, and a strong advocate for the adoption of responsible AI systems. Together with Sound & Vision, we will decide which use cases, AI applications and datasets to work on. We may e.g. target recommender systems, which are widely seen as a risk for diversity, but we may also target ethical concerns in other types of AI systems, such as search engines or automatic tagging or classification systems.
Requirements
Candidates are required to have a PhD in artificial intelligence, information sciences, data science, computer science, science and technology studies or comparable. Candidates who are due to submit their dissertation before May 2023 are also welcome to apply. Further qualifications for candidates include:
- Proven expertise in responsible AI, for example through publications in FaCCT, AIES, or relevant papers in other conferences.
- Motivation to work in the media domain and to disseminate results to our community of media professionals.
- Ability to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team including researchers in Communication Science and Law.
- Excellent knowledge of the English language. Knowledge of (or willingness to quickly learn) Dutch is not required but will be considered an asset.
The description of this project has been left intentionally broad. We welcome candidates with a diverse range of academic backgrounds to apply and are open to adjusting the specifics of the project to the expertise and interests of the selected candidate.
Terms and conditions
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 3,852 to € 4,695. The appointment will be for a period of two years. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
