Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the QuSoft research group for a talented

Postdoc (3 years),

on the subject of characterisation and benchmarking of quantum computers.

Job description

Quantum computing devices are rapidly increasing in scale and complexity. However they are still very far away from the abstract ideal of a computer. For the foreseeable future, running any kind of useful task or algorithm on such a device means explicitly taking into account their physical limitations. The goal of this project is to do theoretical research in the characterisation of noise in quantum devices, with an eye towards experimental implementation. Potential research topics include shadow estimation, benchmarks for quantum computers, and the development of novel characterisation procedures more generally.

This position is established as part of the Quantum Delta NL (https://www.quantumdelta.nl ) program, the Dutch national initiative funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy for the development of quantum technology.

Requirements

We are looking for an excellent scientist with expertise in quantum computing and quantum information processing in general, with a focus on the scalable characterisation of noisy quantum computers.
Needed qualifications for candidates include proven research talent and good academic writing and presentation skills. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English.

Terms and conditions

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 3,929 to € 4,789. The fulltime appointment will be for a period of one year, with the option to extend two more years  (for a total of three) by mutual agreement.
Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.

Information and application

All applications should include:
- A cover letter
- A curriculum vitae with a list of publications
- A research statement
- The names of at least three prominent scientists who can provide letters of recommendation

The deadline for the application is 23 March 2023.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled.

About CWI

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science and is part of the Institutes Organisation of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) . The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large.

CWI is an internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 27 countries, an informal atmosphere and short lines of communication. We have an activity committee that organizes after-work activities and an informal women’s network.

CWI is located at Science Park Amsterdam, the home of AMS-IX, that is presently developing into a major location of research in the physical sciences in The Netherlands, housing the sciences of the University of Amsterdam as well as several other national research institutes next to CWI.

About Research group

QuSoft is the Dutch research Center for Quantum Software that was launched in 2015. Its mission is to develop new communication protocols, algorithms, and applications for small and medium-sized prototypes as well as larger quantum computers. The researchers at QuSoft develop software and applications that exploit the extraordinary power of quantum computers based on their quantum mechanical properties such as superposition, interference and entanglement.
