School of Business and Economics
The School of Business and Economics (SBE) provides high-quality education and excellent research in business administration and economics with a focus on contributing to the social, economic and ecological challenges of our time. Whether it is the use of robots in society or big data, labour market participation or flexibility in the labour market, traffic jams or the housing market, flash crashes in the stock market or choice behaviour in gambling, leadership or change management: we believe in goal-oriented scientific research and understand that progress in academics, the business community and society is achieved through cooperation, openness and social responsibility.
At SBE, all of our highly-motivated colleagues work together closely in a stimulating, dynamic and international environment to achieve our collective goal of encouraging society to make informed choices. Approximately 4,200 Bachelor’s and Master’s students and 1,700 executive students are enrolled at the School, and employs roughly 500 people.
About the department, institute, project
The postdoctoral position is part of a multi-year NWO Vidi grant at the VU Amsterdam, led by Dr. Titus Galama. The project is in the interdisciplinary and rapidly developing area of social-science genetics (genoeconomics). The project seeks to quantify the extent to which environments protect against the genetic risk for unhealthy behaviors and for poor human-capital outcomes (education, cognition, etc). Recent advances in genetics and the recent collection of genetic data in several large social-science datasets with extensive measures of environment over the lifecycle make this research now possible. Rapidly increasing power of genetic prediction allows one to study how critical stages of life (e.g., early childhood) and critical environments influence genetic risk (with particular attention being paid to environmental causation).
The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with Dr Galama and other members of the NWO Vidi research team (a graduate student and various collaborators at the VU Amsterdam and at Erasmus University Rotterdam). The NWO Vidi project is embedded within several larger research efforts / teams, providing a collaborative environment in which scholarly learning and research takes place. In particular, the scholar will have the opportunity to work closely with a separate team led by Dr. Titus Galama at the Center for Economic and Social Research (CESR) at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles (GxE interplay); the team led by Dr. Phillip Koelinger at the VU economics department (genetic discovery); and the team led by Dr. Hans van Kippersluis at Erasmus University, Rotterdam (GxE interplay). Travel has been budgeted for the postdoctoral scholar to facilitate interaction with researchers at CESR, USC, Los Angeles.
Diversity is one of our university’s core values. We are an inclusive community, and we believe that diversity and international activities enhance the quality of education and research. We are always looking for people who can enhance diversity on our campus thanks to their background and experience.
