Postdoc Design and modelling of a new electrohydrodynamic drying process

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

We are looking for

Are you a talented motivated researcher who is interested in food process engineering and new sustainable process technology development? Do you want to understand and predict how electricity can boost the efficiency of hot air drying processes? Do you want to assist in coordinating an ambitious consortium of scientists and industrial partners?

We invite applications for the Postdoc position entitled: ‘Design and modelling of a new electrohydrodynamic drying process’. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying employs an electric field to enhance the mass and heat transfer rates during drying. This new drying principle is suggested to be mild and a factor 2 to 4 more energy efficient compared to traditional drying, thus combining better product quality with lower energy use. The position is part of a larger consortium that combined four academic partners, and several industries.

What will you do?
You will be responsible for the modelling and design of a new bench-scale EHD dryer.

You will:

  • carry out modelling (COMSOL) activities to conceptually design the equipment and be in contact with the Technical Design Studio for the construction of the device;
  • closely work together with a PhD student and compare EHD drying to other drying technologies to evaluate the feasibility of the technology at a large scale for various applications.

The Postdoc project is part of a large NWO KIC consortium focusing on new technology development for  electrically driven non-thermal dewatering of biomass, in short ELECTRIFIED. Within this consortium we collaborate with 5 academic and 8 industrial partners. An additional responsibility of this postdoc position will to assist the project leader with project management, data management. dissemination activities and interactions with industrial and academic partners (25% of your time). You will be hosted in the Laboratory of Food Process Engineering (

Food Process Engineering - WUR

), currently consisting of three full professors, 2 associate and 3 assistant professors, two lecturers and seven technical and supporting staff, around 35 – 45 PhD students and postdocs, and many BSc and MSc students doing their thesis projects in our group. You will be supervised by Dr. Maarten Schutyser and Prof. Remko Boom. The Postdoc project will be embedded in the Dry Food Processing team (

Dry Food Processing - WUR

).

We ask

For this position we are looking for an enthusiastic result-driven scientist with:

  • a completed PhD study in the field of food / chemical process engineering or similar relevant field;
  • a hands-on approach and interest in co-developing a new technology for electrohydrodynamic dewatering;
  • proven experience doing numerical modelling of physical phenomena;
  • the motivation to coach and inspire students, and work together with external partners;
  • the ambition to assist enthusiastically with management of the NWO ELECTRIFIED project;
  • excellent analytical, communication and scientific writing skills.

For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at
