Postdoc Capturing Venus in Total Flux and Polarisation

Updated: 25 days ago
Deadline: 29 May 2024

Contribute to ESA's upcoming Envision mission to Venus by developing a dedicated radiative transfer code and improving retrievals of atmospheric properties.

In this research project you will work closely with instrument teams of two spectrometers on ESA's Envision mission: Venspec-H and Venspec-U. You will develop a sophisticated radiative transfer code (based on an existing Fortran-code) tailored to the optical properties of these two spectrometers that will include various scattering and absorption processes, polarisation of light for all orders of scattering, and the composition and structure of the Venus atmosphere. In close collaboration with both instrument teams and ESA specialists, you will use the code in combination with instrument models to inform the pre-flight calibration processes and to optimise the future data acquisition and analysis.

Need to have:

  • Experience with radiative transfer algorithms including polarisation
  • Experience with the development of large codes
  • Knowledge of scattering and absorption processes in planetary atmospheres
  • Knowledge of Fortran

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of the Venus atmosphere
  • Experience with working with satellite data
  • Experience with working in international teams
