The Institute of Data Science (IDS@UM), led by Distinguished Professor Michel Dumontier invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher in Biomedical Discovery Science.
Job description

The main thrust of your research will be to develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to advance the state of the art in computational drug discovery and personalised medicine. Your research can explore any number of areas including AI-assistance in data curation, semantic data integration, ontology engineering, natural language processing, query answering, and predictive modelling.

You will be responsible to:

  • Develop a leading edge research program
  • Lead and participate in externally funded research projects
  • Collaborate with researchers inside and out of the Institute
  • Recruit and supervise undergraduate, masters and PhD theses and projects
  • Be involved in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Requirements
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Computer Science
  • Research experience and technical virtuosity exemplified by a high quality publication record in at least two of the following areas:
  • Biomedical data science or biomedical informatics
  • Machine learning with sparse, incomplete, temporal, and/or erroneous data
  • Semantic web technologies including ontologies, linked data, and knowledge graphs
  • Programming skills, preferably Python or Java, and code versioning using GitHub/GitLab
  • Successful (co-)supervision of bachelor and masters theses
  • Well versed in biomedicine  (drug, genes, protein, phenotypes, interactions, etc)
  • Preferably experience working with biomedical databases (PubMed, DrugBank, CTD, etc)

Fluency in English, both oral and written, and scientific writing


Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

The full-time position is offered for a period of 1 year. The salary will be set in scale 11 of the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (between € 3.974 and € 5.439 gross per month) depending on qualifications and work experience for a full-time job (38 hours/week). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants could be eligible for a favourable tax treatment (30% rule).
