Job description

In the Chemical Engineering group of ENTEG at the University of Groningen, we are looking for a talented and motivated postodoctoral researcher on electrochemical dewatering processes, such as electrodialysis and electro-osmosis. This position is part of the ELECTRIFIED project (

https://www.nwo.nl/en/news/eight-projects-awarded-within-kic-call-key-technologies

), which is a consortium between University of Groningen, the 4 TUs of the Netherlands and several other industrial partners in the field. The aim is the use of electric driving forces to extract water from biomaterials, mostly in liquid form in order to circumvent any use of heat. This will be done by combining molecularly designed electroresponsive hydrogels, well-controlled electro-osmosis and electrohydrodynamic drying. In this context, the postdoc will work in close collaboration with different partners, focusing on electrocatalysis and electrochemical engineering towards securing efficient and stable operation of such systems, as well as understand possible electrode degradation phenomena.

Responsibilities and tasks:

• synthesis and characterization electrode materials for electrodualysis and electro-osmosis
• fabrication of relevant electrochemical cells with targeted characteristics
• validation and stability of the developed cells
• preparation of scientific articles and conference communications
• participation in acquiring additional funds for this research line
• contribution to the scientific and collaborative research environment in Chemical Engineering group and the ENTEG institute.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated and skilled researcher with a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry or related disciplines. Background in electrocatalysis, electrochemical characterization techniques (e.g., impedance spectroscopy) and chemical synthesis should be proven. The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are mandatory.

Conditions of employment

We offer you, following the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary based on the experience of the candidate up to a maximum of € 4,670 (salary scale 10) gross per month for a full-time working week
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
• a full-time position (1.0 FTE) for 2 years.
