Offer Description

Background and scope of the research
Despite numerous information campaigns, unhealthy eating habits persist in the Dutch population, contributing to elevated rates of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. The choices people make regarding what, how, and when they eat are influenced by their perceptions of the social and nutritional value of food. To encourage individuals to adopt healthier and plant-based diets, we explore how socio-cultural norms about being a good host and indulgent food influence the availability of healthy food during social gatherings. Our aim is to increase the attractiveness of serving healthy meals to guests by accentuating the hedonic pleasures and to develop an alternative consumer model using the utility framework that takes norms and values explicitly into account. Expected scientific output include a conceptual paper on the associations with (un)healthy food at social gatherings and informs the industry how to motivate people to healthy behaviors, and a research paper on how norms and images influence the preferences for serving (un)healthy meals using the utility model.

  • Analyze images using AI software;
