Job description
Topic of research: Fundamentals in ultrafast and ultra-smooth micro-milling of steels with high power ultrashort pulse laser
Ultrashort pulse (USP) laser offers an innovative manufacturing technology that does not require hazardous chemicals. USP laser allows precise and thermal damage-free removal of materials (ablation) for a wide-range of scientific, medical and industrial applications. Precise local energy deposition is one of the main advantages of USP laser that reduce the heat affected zone. These unique properties of ultrashort laser pulses make USP laser ablation a good alternative to other micro-machining processes for ultimate process quality of materials removal. However, its potential is limited by the low ablation rate and the complexity of the associated laser technology. On the other hand, the use of more powerful pulse lasers to increase the ablation rate may result in unwanted effects such as plasma shielding, melting and thermal damage from heat accumulation. Precise micro-milling of steels with ultrashort pulse laser ablation is very challenging but a key enabling technology for many applications. This research project aims understanding the fundamentals in ultrafast and ultra-smooth micro-milling of steel components with USP laser in order to provide in-depth knowledge for industrial applications in smart and precise manufacturing processes.
Qualifications
