We are looking for a postdoc researcher with great experience in EU administrative law and innovative policy-making. This person can help us drive these PED concepts within the EU. Job description
Erasmus School of Law (The Department of Law and Markets) and The Erasmus Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’ of Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) are looking for a postdoctoral researcher on the legal dimension of energy justice in relation to electric vehicles. The Post Doc will be situated in an interdisciplinary project on Vehicle to Grid for Equitable Zero-Emission Transitions in positive energy districts (V2G-QUESTS). The project is co-funded by the NWO and the overacting aim of the project is to contribute to the creation of inclusive positive energy districts (PEDs) by empowering/emancipating/strengthening the power-balancing capacity of private and shared electric vehicles (EVs) in thus far EV-poor areas.
The research evolves around what governance and regulation mechanisms are required for equitable V2G in PEDs? It has been concluded recently that often the models and methods that are used to compute the potential of PEDs in decreasing emissions are in the hands of academics and analysts whilst it is clear that developers, city planners, communities, municipalities, and policymakers are actors that have the power to decide and implement the concept of PEDs. Our project researcher brings law and regulation experts in smart cities together in order to complete a quadruple helix view of the problem to provide V2G in low‐income PEDs. Specifically, our postdoc will work with the partners including public authorities in the identification of regulatory, governance, and legal barriers for V2G. The Post Doc will lead the Working Package on Governance and Regulation.

Requirements
We are looking for a colleague with:
  • A completed and relevant doctoral degree in administrative law, EU law, public administration, political science, or related social science discipline with demonstrable empirical and interdisciplinary experience and affinity with the theme of energy justice;
  • The ability and motivation to conduct independent scientific research and lead co-authored publications;
  • Experience at PhD level with qualitative analysis;
  • Experience or an affinity with action-oriented research;
  • Experience with interdisciplinary scholarship;
  • Interest in bridging the science and society gap;
  • Experience in setting up and maintaining a network of contacts and organizing cooperation, both in science and with companies and social institutions;
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the formal and informal structure of an organization and how you move within it to achieve the desired results;
  • Participation in international academic networks and conferences;
  • The ability and motivation to mentor PhD students.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills

Conditions of employment
We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).
The start date of this position is 01-April-2024 and you will be based in the Law & Markets department at Erasmus School of Law (ESL). This position is for 0.8 - 1 FTE. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 3.226 to a maximum of € 5.090 gross per month (Scale 10) on a full-time basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. The contract is for the duration of 24 months.

Department
Within the Erasmus School of Law the project is guided by Professor Public Law & Sustainability, Leonie Reins (Public Law & Sustainability) and Professor Martin de Jong of the Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity (DoiP). The research consortium is supported by an international advisory committee that will participate in one meeting per year to discuss the progress of V2G‐QUESTS with the team. They will also be asked to provide feedback on the technical reports. The committee is constituted of the following experts: Maya Abou‐Zahid (F) (Associate Professor in Behavior Modeling, American University of Beirut, Lebanon), Grazia Speranza (F) (Professor of Operations Research, University of Brescia, Italy), and Ola Jabaly (F) (Associate Professor in Operations Research, Politecnico di Milano, Italy).
Department
The overarching mission of the Department of Law and Markets (L&M) is to develop and deliver cutting-edge, high-quality research and teaching on legal institutions shaping markets and their implications for sustainability and socio-economic justice. The research group specifically studies legal and societal problems generated in the complex dynamics of international, European and domestic laws regulating trade, industry, investment, money, and more generally markets. The focus is on how to make the law in any form socially, environmentally and financially sustainable, how to deal with technological innovation on an inclusive basis and how to combine private and public interests responsibly. Researchers have different profiles, including public law, international and EU law, legal theory, and commercial law, and the Department is keen on multidisciplinary research.
The Department is responsible for a considerable part of the bachelor and master curricula of Erasmus School of Law. Specifically, L&M provides bachelor teaching in, constitutional and administrative law, international and European Union law, jurisprudence, legal philosophy and commercial law. Furthermore, L&M is responsible for 6 Master programmes including in public law, international and European Union law and commercial law. Most of the bachelor teaching is in Dutch, while most of the master teaching is in English.
The successful candidate will also be embedded in the Erasmus Initiative Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity , an interdisciplinary research centre bringing together scholars in law, business and philosophy and focusing on enabling as many people as possible to benefit from increasing prosperity, whilst minimising the negative consequences. The members of the initiative develop understanding of inclusive prosperity, and expose its drivers. They also show how this knowledge can be used to effectively address contemporary societal challenges in the Netherlands and elsewhere. The combination of academic expertise puts the initiative in an excellent position to study how in a context that is “oriented” by different layers of legislation and (self) regulation, public and private sector actors can interact to leverage inclusive prosperity. How are the benefits of activities distributed and how are the interests of all stakeholders protected? Through which mechanisms and legal institutions is inclusion promoted? What are the epistemologies of injustice and hurdles to transformative change? The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) play an important role in the assessment of current situations and contemplation of possible improvements.
