LOCATION: Royal NIOZ - Texel
VACANCY ID: 2021- 26
CLOSING DATE: October 31, 2021
THE DEPARTMENT
The department of National Marine Facilities (NMF) manages the Dutch national marine research fleet, equipment and facilities on behalf of the national scientific community. These activities include preparation, planning, logistics, operations and maintenance of the vessels and marine equipment. NMF provides full support to researchers in preparation and execution of missions at sea. In addition, the NMF policy advisor maintains the international network in which the Dutch research fleet operates.
THE VACANCY
As policy advisor NMF, you play a coordinating role in organising seagoing research in the broadest sense of the word.
You are the first point of contact for Dutch marine scientists who want to do seagoing research. You advise on the sea-going component of research proposals to be submitted and support the researchers in realising the expeditions when their proposal has been approved. You are responsible for allocation and planning of ships and equipment for scientific research, in consultation with the researchers and the National Sailing Commission. You will also advise the NIOZ / NWO management on policy matters regarding seagoing research and support the other groups within NMF when necessary. Furthermore, you represent NMF and participate in (inter)national meetings and platforms such as the Ocean Facilities Exchange Group (OFEG), European Research Vessel operators (ERVO), International Research Ship operators (IRSO), where operational aspects of marine research are discussed. The OFEG group includes our most important European partners, with whom the Netherlands shares shipping time in a pool via a barter system. This allows Dutch researchers to sail on the ships of the partners and do research in places that are difficult to reach for our ships.
NMF works with Marine Facilities Planning (MFP), the online platform that guides applicants for seagoing research through the process from application to executing of the research cruise. MFP is also used for planning of the vessel’svoyages, personnel and equipment. As application manager of MFP, you are the sparring partner for the software designers in developing new functionality for the benefit of the Dutch and international users of MFP.
THE CANDIDATE
You have a relevant (marine) scientific academic education (minimal at MSc level) and experience in hands on marine research. You possess good social skills, for maintaining national and international contacts. Given the positioning of NIOZ and NMF in the international field, excellent command of the English language is a must.
Obviously you have good communication, administrative and social skills. You can set the right priorities, work in a planned and structured way, function well in a team, but can also work independently. You have an interest in marine science, ships and research equipment and an affinity with technology.
OUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS
We offer a challenging position in a dynamic organisation. Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). We offer a full-time employment contract for the duration of one year. If you perform well, there is the prospect of permanent employment. Our terms of employment are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Employers' Association of Research Institutes (WVOI). We strive for our staff to reflect the diversity in society, including age, gender and cultural background. Therefore, we appreciate it when candidates apply who can increase the diversity of NIOZ. Do you recognise yourself in this position? Then we invite you to apply. An assessment may be part of the procedure.
Please apply online at www.workingatnioz.com For additional information about the procedure, please contact Alex Cofino , Head of Department of NMF.
All other questions: Sigrid Moerbeek , senior HR-advisor.
