The department Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology. It was established in 1957, shortly after the university was founded. The department has approximately 500 employees (411 fte), 14 full-time professors, 370 Bachelor's and Master's students, about 145 doctoral candidates and 40 trainee design engineers. The department is located in the Helix and Matrix buildings on the TU/e campus.

Sustainable Process Engineering (SPE)

The Partnership Sustainable Process Engineering consists of the three groups Chemical Reactor Engineering headed by Dr. John van der Schaaf, the group Micro Flow Chemistry & Synthetic Methodology group of Dr. Timothy Noël and the Inorganic Membranes & Membrane Reactors group of Fausto Gallucci. The SPE partnership consists of 6 (associate) professors, 2 UHDs, 2 UDs, 10 postdocs, more than 35 PhD students and 6 support staff.

The group's mission is to be among the world's top academic research groups in its field and to be leading in the development of novel technologies for new, highly efficient, inherently safe, and robust (micro)structured multiphase processing systems, which show the best productivity by a dedicated design of all relevant dimensions and optimum choice of dedicated operational procedures.

The research of John van der Schaaf's Chemical Reactor Engineering group focuses on the development of catalytic and non-catalytic multiphase reactors that use rotation to create high gravity and high shear conditions. These conditions lead to excellent interphase mass transfer, intraphase mixing, and fluid-to-wall heat transfer. In future research Van der Schaaf will focus on the performance of high-gravity high-shear equipment as a function of design, operating conditions, and fluid properties. The group collaborates with major industrial parties both national and international.

Research in the Noël research group encompasses the development of new catalytic strategies and technologies for chemical synthesis. The catalytic targets are chosen in such a way that continuous-flow micro reactors and chemical engineering principles can make a substantial impact. The group strives to develop new technological tools that are of interest to the pharmaceutical industry and can overcome challenges in a variety of specialty applications, e.g. organic synthesis, chemical biology, material science, etc.

The research of Fausto Gallucci at the Inorganic Membranes and Membrane Reactors (SIR) research group is related to the development of membranes and novel multiphase reactors, in particular membrane reactors and dynamically operated reactors. His research focuses on the interaction of heterogeneous catalysis, transport phenomena, and fluid mechanics in these novel multifunctional reactors. The SIR chair coordinates and participates in several large European Projects and works in strict collaborations with several industrial partners.

The duties and responsibilities:

  • Supporting teaching in courses like Separation Technology and Process Design;
  • Writing proposals for research projects and publications;
  • Supervise and manage research projects;
  • Preparing and conducting (parts of) research together with PhD students, in accordance with the coordinated research design and in accordance with legislation and regulations;
  • Analyze and interpret the results.
