We are looking for a visionary colleague who will further develop the Stevin 2 laboratory into a leading hub in experimental structural engineering focused on both research and education.
The Department of Engineering Structures (ES) provides education and conducts research in the areas of civil infrastructure, buildings, structures for renewable energy, eco-friendly structural materials, recycling and reuse of materials and structural elements and smart monitoring of structures and infrastructure. The department’s approach is based on the fundamentals of mechanics, physics, chemistry and material science, which serve as solid basis for engineering innovations in the fields of concrete, steel, composite, timber, road and railway structures and structures for energy transition. The department is proud to host the well-known Stevin 2 laboratory.
The Stevin 2 Laboratory (Lab) is world famous in conducting large scale experiments in the fields of structural, railway and pavement engineering. It also executes unique experiments in the fields of renewable energy and recycling. Another major task of the Lab is to support education by means of providing experimental setups that demonstrate the major phenomena in the field of Civil Engineering and enable students to conduct experiments themselves.
This position is established in order to strengthen the role of the lab in experimental research in fields of urbanizations and transportation, mitigation of the climate change and energy transition.
The position holder is expected to be responsible for the lab staff, the lab equipment and HSE in the lab. (S)he will organize the support of the research projects and educational activities the lab is specialized in. Furthermore, the development of the expertise area of the lab staff falls within the responsibility of the position holder.

The successful candidate:
- Holds MSc and, preferably, PhD degree, in civil, mechanical, electrical engineering or applied physics;
- Is experienced in experimental research in the fields of Civil, Environmental and/or Mechanical Engineering;
- Enjoys collaboration with academics, lecturers and students;
- Upholds high standards in Health and Safety;
- Understands and supports the diversity and inclusion values;
- Demonstrates good verbal communication skills in English;
- Is a team player who is able and enjoys working within a diverse international environment.
- A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
