We welcome open-minded, creative candidates willing to explore new avenues of education in the field of waves dynamics within the hydraulic engineering environment.

We are delighted to welcome an enthusiastic lecturer with a focus on education in the field of waves as it pertains to the description of hydraulics in both natural and engineered systems. These lectures are part of new MSc curriculum within Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) with an increased emphasis on elements such as student-centred learning, team-based teaching and multidisciplinary working groups. The lecturer hired through this vacancy posting will be directly involved in team-teaching in the Hydraulic Engineering Track throughout the 2-year MSc program.

Surface gravity waves play an important role in the design of flood defences, nature-based solutions, harbours and even surf pools. Related topics are runup, overtopping, wave breaking, wave impacts, infragravity waves, (long) waves on rivers, wave diffraction in harbours, mooring forces, etc. Hence, a thorough understanding of the underlying physics of surface waves by our students is essential, not only to be able to work with the state-of-the-art wave measuring and modeling tools that are used throughout the international hydraulic science and engineering community, but also to critically assess the outcomes and if necessary, come up with improved or alternative approaches. These lectures build the foundation to make these techniques to be readily usable by MSc students in their coursework and future careers. As such, we are seeking a new colleague with a background in waves to strengthen the link between theory and practice within the CEG curriculum.

As part of the Hydraulic Engineering department your education activities will focus on the role of waves in both natural and engineered water systems, this includes the marine, coastal, river and lake environments, with applications related to flood protection from extreme conditions, nature restoration, energy transition, shipping, floating/submerged urban developments, etc. In view of climate change impacts these applications often employ nature-based solutions that are affected by the presence of waves where the success depends on the understanding of the natural system and how it is affected by human interventions.

We expect an inspiring lecturer, who will develop attractive educational programs to address the current and future needs in the field of waves. An important responsibility is the development, delivery and management of MSc course material in collaboration with a teaching team, as well as (co-)supervision of BSc/MSc students, project teams and design projects. In the education programme, new developments from engineering practice, as well as education practice, should be continuously implemented. We also expect that the new lecturer takes a leading role in developing different forms of education where appropriate (e.g., online, blended, open access, etc).

At TU Delft the lecturer position focusses on education and is not part of a tenure track process; therefore, production of research publications and research funding are not strictly required. The distribution between education and other tasks is approximately 80:20. Education activities consist primarily of development and delivery of MSc-level course material (e.g., lectures, exercises, assessment); course and teaching team management; and supervision of BSc and MSc thesis projects and other student projects (e.g., consultancy/multidisciplinary projects).      

  • We seek a colleague who has the dedication to pursue an educational career in academia; research output is valued but considered secondary for this position.
  • You hold a PhD degree in hydraulic engineering, environmental fluid mechanics or a closely related field. You have relevant experience in and good knowledge of the hydraulic engineering field, in particular coastal specializations, and can act as an integrator of various disciplines in education and projects. You have demonstrated experience or at least affinity with the analysis, research and/or design of hydraulic engineering projects.
  • You have experience in academic teaching and/or delivery of course programmes for engineering professionals. We expect strong didactical skills, experience in or a strong motivation for educational development and a varied use of new teaching methods, a broad view on education, and an inspiring and team player attitude. You have an academic teaching certificate or are willing to obtain one.
  • Experience with a coding language commonly used in engineering is considered essential (e.g., Fortran, Visual Basic, Matlab, R, Python). A willingness to learn and use Python and incorporate it in education activities is required.
