The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) offers education and research in a wide range of science disciplines, from traditional disciplines such as physics and biology to interdisciplinary disciplines such as biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and industrial engineering and management. This position will be embedded in FSE’s School of Science and Engineering, which offers 14 Bachelor degree programmes and 26 Master degree programmes to approximately 71000 students. In particular, you will become part of the so-called X-Lab-PAM team that takes care of physics, astronomy and mathematics laboratory and practical classes in the Faculty’s programmes.
Job description
We are seeking a Lecturer in (bio-)physics who can strengthen our Bachelor degree programme in Biomedical Engineering (BME). This is an interdisciplinary programme that offers students a science-based training in engineering, with an emphasis on technology for biomedical applications. The programme is centred around biomedical engineering courses and practicals, mixed with disciplinary topics like mathematics, physics, materials science and biology, that form a solid engineering foundation.
The tasks of the lecturer will include:
- coordination of physics laboratories and laboratory classes in the BME programme
- management and maintenance of the lab facilities, including preparation/purchasing of equipment
- Rrecruitment, selection and management of teaching assistants
- supervision of the daily operation of the labs, including students and teaching assistants in the labs
- innovating new and existing practicals for relevance to BME, and to incorporate on-site and on-line components
- introducing and implementing numerical / computational assignments in BME practicals
- developing, implementing and conducting lecture demonstrations (in collaboration with other BME course lecturers)
- working with the multi-disciplinary X-Lab-PAM team to support practical education across Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics
- other teaching duties as assigned.
Qualifications
We encourage you to apply if you:
- have a PhD degree in the area of medical engineering, biophysics, or a related field
- have experience in physics experiments for undergraduate students
- have excellent laboratory or computer skills
- in possession of a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO). If do not have a UTQ/BKO, you will start as Teacher/Docent 4 and have to start with the UTQ/BKO within a year
- have good command of spoken and written English (Note: the Faculty of Science and Engineering education programmes are given in English)
- have a willingness to learn the Dutch Language (if you are not a Dutch speaker)
- are a team player with good communication skills
- are able to work well in an international, culturally diverse, environment.
Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary with a minimum of € 3,821 up to a maximum of € 5,230 gross per month (salary scale 11, starting salary depends on qualifications and experience) for a full-time position. UFO profile Teacher/Docent 3
- a holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus of respectively 8% and 8.3% of your yearly salary
- a minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment
- training opportunities to further develop your didactic capabilities
- an appointment for one year that will be extended indefinitely based on a positive performance review and starting the UTQ/BKO.
