Job description

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a leading research university specializing in engineering science and technology with strong bonds to industry practice. Following the strategic goals, the Department of the Built Environment (BE) aims to educate future generations of students and meet today’s and tomorrow’s societal challenges.

In the Department of the Built Environment there is a position available for a lecturer in the unit Urban Systems and Real Estate. The Department offers a comprehensive, research-oriented Master of Science (MSc.) degree program within the broad field of the Built Environment. Graduates go on to work in diverse professional areas, such as architecture, urban design and planning, real estate management, building physics, installation techniques, construction and building production.

The department is also a research institute comprising various laboratories and four research programs in which high-level research is conducted. The strategic research agenda of the USRE unit focuses on the major challenges cities are facing to create healthy, sustainable, and smart urban environments, with important roles assigned to AI and digital tools as enablers. The program of USRE is closely connected and contributes to the EIRES and EASI institutes of the TU/e as well as the department’s own Urban Development Initiative.

The USRE unit is responsible for education in the bachelor and master program of the department in the areas of urban planning and transportation, real estate management and development, and information systems in the built environment. The unit also contributes to the 4TU master program Construction Management and Engineering and TU/e master program AI and Engineering Systems.

The department is looking for a full-time lecturer who, as member of the USRE unit, will be involved in the education part of USRE in the Bachelor program of the department. The candidate will be responsible for teaching courses and tutoring students in challenge-based learning projects on smart city development covering the areas of urban planning and real estate management. The candidate should be able to implement our mission to educate students in developing an academic attitude and research-oriented approach to address planning and management decision problems in shaping cities of the future.


Job requirements
  • holds a Master Degree in the field of urban planning, urban development or a related field;
  • has a broad orientation in urban planning and the various subfields, and is well-informed about recent developments in this field at an international level; this broadness over a wide spectrum of urban planning and real estate is evidenced with projects, publications, etc.
  • has access to adequate networks in the professional practice, whether in planning, consultancy or public administration;
  • has proven didactic qualities and the ability to pass on knowledge and skills to students;
  • is able to use rigorous scientific approaches to problems of applied relevance;
  • is willing to work on education and applied research within a team.
  • has a good command of English, both orally and in writing.

  • A monthly salary of minimum € 3.974,- to maximum € 5.439,- for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 11 collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities).
