Job description

The Chair of Modern English Literature and Culture invites applications for a temporary Lectureship (teaching only) in Modern English literature (0.7 FTE, fixed-term for 3 years).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and co-teach a number of courses from our Modern English literature offering (post-1550) at undergraduate level, including a module on literary theory and a survey module (For North American applicants: the teaching will amount to the equivalent of a 2-3 load per annum.) These courses have existing syllabi and, in a number of cases, outlines of individual classes. The successful applicant will be required to teach classes in person throughout the academic year, though some courses may be taught in a hybrid online and physical environment. English is the only language of instruction in the Department.

The duties of teaching administration are limited to planning and assessing student work and to holding an office hour each week.

The post is available for a fixed term of thirty-six months from 1 February, 2022.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will
● be able to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in the area of English literature after 1550
● have experience teaching modern English literature and language skills at university level
● demonstrate the ability to transfer high-level and current research to the classroom
● be able to work in a team and under the supervision of course coordinators
● have excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
● a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of €2,836 to a maximum of €4,474 (salary scale 10) gross per month for a full-time position.
● the statutory 8% holiday allowance
● an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The appointment will be on a fixed-term basis from 1 February 2022 to 31 January 2025.
