Do you have a strong command of Modern Standard Arabic and a passion for teaching? Are you experienced in language acquisition and interested in contributing to the understanding of the Middle East and North Africa? Then apply as lecturer in Islam studies!


In its teaching and research, the Department of Islam, Politics and Society focuses mainly on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA region). This region is witnessing significant social, religious and political developments. A good knowledge of Arabic is a prerequisite for studying these developments. Therefore, teaching Arabic is an important part of the department’s portfolio.

The teaching duties of the lecturer will consist of teaching the basics of Arabic language acquisition in Ba 1 (three courses) and, together with a fellow lecturer, a course in Ba 2. These Arabic courses prepare students for a stay in Cairo (NVIC) or Rabat (NIMAR) in the second semester of Ba 2. You will also maintain contacts with NVIC and NIMAR.


Profile
  • You have an excellent command of both written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
  • Your have successfully completed an accredited course in teaching Arabic as a foreign language.
  • You have extensive experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language, preferably in an academic context.
  • You have knowledge of the latest insights in the field of teaching foreign languages in general and Arabic in particular.
  • You actively contribute to the implementation of Arabic language acquisition as part of the curriculum.
  • Preferably, you can teach in Dutch.

The Department Islam, Politics and Society is responsible for teaching a Bachelor’s and Master’s track in Religious Studies. We are an interdisciplinary department consisting of anthropologists, a political scientist, a scholar of Islamic studies, a philosopher, and Arabists.

Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies
Staff and students in the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies reflect on the great challenges of our time, exploring concepts, belief systems and worldviews. In this way they provide philosophical and religious context to the societal debate and contribute to the analysis and solution of major societal challenges. The faculty has over 180 staff, organized in eight academic departments and four support departments. Our academics collaborate in six research centres and teach more than 1,000 students.

We offer
  • We will give you a temporary employment contract of one year with the prospect of an indefinite contract. 
  • Your salary within salary scale 10 depends on your previous education and number of years of (relevant) work experience. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
