We are seeking applications from scholars of Japan with a PhD in global political economy, international relations, political science, development studies, or geography, with demonstrated teaching experience and research potential. The ideal candidate has experience in supervising BA and MA theses, an in-depth understanding of contemporary Japan, and proficiency in the Japanese language. We have identified supervision and teaching needs in political economy, politics, and international relations.
Selection Criteria
- A doctorate in global political economy, international relations, political science, development studies, or geography with a focus on contemporary Japan.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and supervising theses.
- Demonstrated excellence in research and publishing commensurate with the applicant’s career stage.
- High level of proficiency in English and Japanese.
Key responsibilities
- Supervising theses in Japan Studies, (East) Asian Studies and International Relations/Global Political Economy.
- Teaching BA- and MA-level courses related to political economy, politics, or international relations with a focus on Japan/East Asia, in the BA Japan Studies and MA Asian studies (Leiden), BA International Studies (The Hague), and MA International Relations (Leiden).
- Developing a research trajectory, including the submission of competitive grant proposals.
- Contribution to the administrative work within the Japan Studies program and/or related programs in the Humanities.

Terms and conditions
We offer an 18 months fulltime position (38 hours per week) from 1 August 2022 - 31 January 2024, with the possibility of a permanent position thereafter.
Salary range from €3807.- to €5211.- gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). The University Lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until they fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of years of relevant work experience.
