You will be working at the department of Arts and Culture, more specifically at the Musicology division, which comprises various chair groups responsible for the Bachelor’s in Musicology/Muziekwetenschap and the MA Arts and Culture. What are you going to do?
Our lecturer in Cultural Musicology will act as a replacement for a member of our staff on medical leave. We expect candidates for this position to have experience with and an interest in:
- postcolonial and decolonial studies, ideally with focus topics that relate to the Global South
- ethnographical methods in music studies;
- music archiving, including its history and cultural politics;
- a pronounced interest in current theory formation in cultural musicology, including, for instance, questions of immaterial heritage and restitution.
The UvA’s Special collections holds, among others, the famous Jaap Kunst collection, initiated by one of the founders of the field of ethnomusicology. This collection comes with a great responsibility to today’s scholars that is explored by numerous research projects, and it contains materials with which our students and, in particular, the lecturer in Cultural Musicology can engage. We also host a gamelan semar pegulingan on which students from various courses can try out their skills under the guidance of expert musicians.
You will be teaching within the Cultural Musicology curriculum at the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Musicology and Music Studies. Your educational duties will also include supervising theses.
Tasks and responsibilities
You will be teaching at the Musicology division of the Department of Arts and Culture, which will include teaching in the field of Cultural Musicology, as well as teaching more general subjects, and include the following tasks:
- teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;
- supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships).
- attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues;
- marking (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
- coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
Your experience and profile
- You have an academic degree in a relevant discipline, such as cultural musicology, ethnomusicology.
- You preferably have a PhD in a relevant field.
- You have experience in teaching within comparable programmes
- Ideally, you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO).
- You are able to teach in English.
What can we offer you?
We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of one year. The employment contract is for 23 hours a week for a fixed period because the work is temporarily being carried out due to replacement of a staff member. Preferred starting date is 01 September 2023.
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € 2.960 - € 4.670 gross per month, based on 38 hours per week. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
