Junior Researcher in Private International Law

The Asser Institute, based in The Hague, and affiliated with the University of Amsterdam is seeking an enthusiastic JUNIOR RESEARCHER IN PRIVATE INTERNATIONAL LAW on a part-time basis (22,8 hours per week/0,6 FTE). They will be working on the (EU-funded) project “Private international law in motion – PAX 2.0”.

PAX 2.0 combines a number of educational and training activities to ensure a better understanding and application of the main EU legal instruments in the area of civil justice. In short, it seeks to ensure that the project consortium further develops and expands students’, academics’ and trainee judges’ knowledge on major recent developments of EU private international law, through moot courts and judicial trainings respectively.

The organisation

The Asser Institute is a research centre for international and European law, located in The Hague, with a high public and international profile. Its mission is to contribute to the development of international and European law by conducting independent fundamental research, policy-oriented research, and commissioned research, as well as by initiating and facilitating academic and expert meetings, (professional) education, and public events with a view to disseminating knowledge on international and European law.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The main tasks will include:

  • Contribute to comparative research (collecting, grouping and classification of data, case law and case studies);
  • Contribute to moot case monitoring (compilation of relevant cases, elaboration and review of cases based on EU regulations and international conventions);
  • Contribute to knowledge exchange and dissemination (academic articles, dissemination of information into regular channels of communication and events, blogs & social media);
  • Engage actively with the Asser research community.

Your experience and profile:

Candidates are expected to meet the following requirements and have the following competencies: 

  • Completed LLM in private international or/and private European law;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Command of the Dutch language is an advantage;
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to a stimulating research community;
  • Organisational and communications skills.

Our offer

You will be appointed at the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Law School, and seconded to the Asser Institute in The Hague. The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week ranges from € 2,9670 to € 4,670.  Remuneration depends on the level of experience, education and knowledge. Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of year bonus.

This appointment will be for a period of one year.
