Our team and mission

The Strategy, Programme and Transformation Department has three principal activities: Programme and Business Development, Market Intelligence and Socio-Economic Impact and Strategic Communications. The NewSpace Business Development activity addresses development of the New Space ecosystem, catalyses engagement with the Directorate through networking and forums, analysis how ARTES strategic and generic programme lines can nurture NewSpace industry and establishes how to best link up with initiatives by the Directorate of Commercialisation, Industry and Procurement, EU and Member States.

The Market Intelligence team develops actionable evidence including market intelligence, financial analysis, socio-economic impact assessments, databases and reports to support the activities of the telecommunications and integration applications  Directorate of ESA.

You can choose between the following topics:

1) Topic 1: Horizon Scanning and Future Market Opportunities

The satellite communications sector has been evolving with growing pace over the last few years, this largely being triggered by the emergence of the many “New Space” actors from across the world along with a surge of investment into the commercial space sector. This new era has also seen the realisation of new satcom system concepts and advanced technologies. Now more than ever, clear market information and insightful business intelligence are essential to fully understand the underlying movements, trends, initiatives, players, and technology developments in competition with the satellite telecommunications industry and beyond.

This internship project involves market intelligence support to the telecommunications and integrated applications directorate.

As an intern, you will undertake analysis of future trends (including macro trends beyond the space sector) and investigate their impact on the satellite telecommunications and integrated applications market. Through this topic, you will contribute to the further transformation of the telecommunications and integrated applications directorate programme and activities in response to the ongoing fundamental market changes of the 2020s.

2) Topic 2: Satellite Communications Market Intelligence

The satellite communications sector has been evolving with growing pace over the last few years, this largely being triggered by the emergence of the many “New Space” actors from across the world along with a surge of investment into the commercial space sector. This new era has also seen the realisation of new satellite communications system concepts and advanced technologies. Now more than ever, clear market information and insightful business intelligence are essential to fully understand the underlying movements, trends, initiatives, players, and technology developments in competition with the satellite telecommunications industry and beyond.

This internship project involves market intelligence support to the telecommunications and integrated applications directorate, including analysis of both European and international markets. 

  • On the European side, you will undertake analysis of national strategies and priorities of ESA member states and map these to the relevant telecommunications and integrated applications directorate programme and activities. This project will also include assessment of broader policies relevant to downstream applications and other vertical market segments.
  • On the international side, you will analyse trends, opportunities and threats, and market champions in a European context and as part of the global space economy. This topic also includes market analysis European activities in a global context, assessments of global activities relevant to connectivity and space solutions, and monitoring relevant market developments in the USA, India, and other spacefaring nations.

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.


Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Educational knowledge:

1) Topic 1: Background and knowledge of the space industry would be an asset, as well as experience undertaking market research. 

2) Topic 2: Background and knowledge of the space industry would be an asset, as well as experience undertaking market research.
