Internship Opportunity in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes.

ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We therefore welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged.

Location

Our team and mission

This position is based at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) - Frascati, Italy

The Applications Section activities and responsibilities are mainly in the research and development (R&D) domain for earth observation-based solutions addressing the European and global international environment and development agenda. Most of our projects are characterized by the active involvement of key stakeholders throughout the design, development, and validation phases, to ensure the integration of the developed innovative EO-based solutions into the end-users’ operational systems and practices.

The  team is based at the ESRIN site of ESA and has eight EO experts, each of them overviewing specific domains where EO data are used, such as marine, carbon and agriculture, among others.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: Land surface temperature extremes in Europe and Africa using Thermal Earth Observation Data

Several high spatial resolution thermal satellite missions expected to operate in the coming years. Among those, the European Space Agency will launch the Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM) mission, set to join the Copernicus Sentinel system in 2028. The satellite will have Thermal Infrared observation capabilities over land and coastal regions in support of agriculture management services, and possibly a range of additional services.

In the view of the LSTM, ESA conducts research projects using data from currently available thermal sensors to develop future applications, including thermal data retrieved from the International Space Station through the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment (ECOSTRESS).

Through your internship, you will work with data from the ECOSTRESS sensor. You will analyze land surface temperature [extremes] for the European continent (EU mainly) and the African continent between 2018-2023. ECOSTRESS data are also extensively used to estimate evapotranspiration.

You will use ESA supported cloud computing platforms to conduct your research.
