Would you like to use your project management and software development skills to work on value-driven design at the number one computing science department in the Netherlands? Then you have a part to play at iHub, Radboud University's interdisciplinary research centre for digitalization and society. We are looking for a head of iLab, where you will develop software and designs relevant for application and society.
Values by design is a (software) engineering strategy in which moral values aimed at enhancing the public or common good - rather than aspects of technical performance or profit maximization - determine the design of a system. An example of value driven design is the identity platform IRMA originally developed at Radboud University and now operated by a non-profit spin-off, where the values of privacy, data protection, empowerment and transparency have been designed into the technology. More recent projects are PubHubs (link is external) (link is external) , aimed at a new community/social network and sphere transgression watch (link is external) (link is external) , aimed at making the growing influence of Big Tech visible in various societal spheres. Such value-driven design affects not only the software architecture and data flows in a system, but also its user interface design and user experience (UX). iHub is seeking a new lab head to lead iLab's value-driven development and design activities within iHub, currently consisting of around 10 people, working on different projects. The profile of the lab head consists of a 50/50 mix of 'project management' and 'software development'.
As Head of iLab, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of iLab, including team coordination and management of research and development projects. You will cooperate as hands-on team leader with iLab programmers and designers in existing activities, organise and maintain (together with colleagues) the ICT infrastructure within iLab, for systematic (open source) software development and deployment. You will be expected to secure funding for research and (open source) software development. Furthermore, you will engage with researchers within iHub and support them, if fitting, with dedicated software and/or designs, for prototypes and demos, and also engage with external parties for collaboration and project acquisition and for ensuring the spread, integration, and usage of software developed within iLab. In addition, you will co-supervise Bachelor's or Master's students who choose a project within iLab. You will contribute to the visibility of iHub and iLab in the Netherlands and abroad, for example through talks and professional and popular publications, possibly also through media appearances. Lastly, you will work with iHub's directors on strategy with regard to iLab.
Profile
  • You have excellent (open source) programming skills, for example in back-end or front-end design.
  • You have several years of experience in development and management (including funding acquisition) of open source software.
  • You have a background in a relevant area (such as computer science or artificial intelligence), preferably at a Master's degree level.
  • You have an intrinsic motivation to be part of a value-oriented research centre and willingness to cooperate with researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds.
  • You have affinity with internationally oriented academic research environments, and more particularly, with iHub's value-driven approach.
  • You have excellent communication skills towards colleagues, outsiders, experts and non-experts.

We are

You will be appointed at the Computer Science Department of the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences (iCIS). Radboud University's iCIS is an internationally recognised institute, consistently ranked among the top Computer Science departments in the Netherlands. The institute focuses its research on three themes: Data Science, Digital Security and Software Science. In recent evaluations, iCIS has been consistently ranked as the No. 1 Computing Science department in the Netherlands. More specifically, you will be appointed at iHub.
iHub is Radboud University's interdisciplinary research centre for digitalization and society. It exists since the spring of 2019, with a mix of funding from the university board, from research funding bodies and from external projects. Research at iHub is cross-interdisciplinary, with scholars from across the humanities, social sciences, engineering and natural sciences, focused on urgent questions raised by the increased digitalization and datafication of science and society. The center's research is organized in four value-based research lines: solidarity & justice, freedom & democracy, privacy & security,  and expertise & meaningful work (see https://ihub.ru.nl/research.page for further information). An integral part of iHub is iLab, an environment where actual software and designs are developed that integrate values specifically relevant for application in society.
