Job description

Do you want your work to actually change the world? Be a high-profile and valued member of a team developing revolutionary technology? And educate a diverse and enthusiastic next generation of engineers? All in the heart of Europe’s premier high-tech region? Looking to further strengthen the ambitious and diverse group of researchers, we have opened a position in the Physics of Energy Storage.

It is without doubt that the energy transition cannot succeed without new energy storage solutions. Consequently, it is critical to fundamentally understand, find, and design new materials that act as storage media for thermal energy, hydrogen, electricity, etc.

As group leader in the Transport in Permeable Media group you define and execute a high-quality research and education program on the physics of energy storage media. Think of thermochemical and phase change materials, zeolites, MOF’s, etc., which are expected to contribute to the societal and technological challenge of energy storage. You explore the multifunctionality of materials: e.g. combined energy and CO2 storage, or combined energy storage and water harvesting. You embed this work in the broader field of reactive permeable media to fully exploit the connections with internal and external academic partners. You instigate an experimental research activity in the dynamic field of energy storage. At the same time, you keep a keen eye on the valorization potential of your research activities, while fully exploring the synergies in your external network of knowledge and value chain partners.

Presently, the Transport in Permeable Media group’s research focuses on transport in permeable media, with emphasis on thermal energy storage materials and technological porous media. Furthermore, the group has started with research activities on H2 storage. The group has a recognized experimental position with a long track record in building, adapting, and using NMR-imaging tools for studying processes in non-transparent media: i.e., porous media, thin layers, etc. Additionally, the group has built up a plethora of analytical tools for studying adsorption processes and structural changes in materials: TGA-DSC, DVS, XRD, BET, etc. The group characterizes its work as use-inspired basic research: challenges in real applications are transferred into fundamental physical questions and addressed at this level, and new fundamental insights are challenged in view of their possible valorization potential.

Consisting of an interdisciplinary team of physicists, materials scientists and chemists, the group is embedded in the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) at the TU/e and has long-lasting collaboration with TNO. This collaboration has resulted in founding a spin-off company, Cellcius, that is dedicated to bringing heat storage technology to the market.

As group leader and chair of the Transport in Permeable Media group, you are expected to contribute to teaching in the Applied Physics BSc and MSc programmes, and to supervise students, PhDs, and postdocs. You will act as direct supervisor to existing TPM staff, reporting to the Dean on all matters pertaining to the management of the group and its facilities. Acting together with, and on behalf of the group, you will further develop the group’s research, educational and personnel strategies. In addition to realizing your own ambitions in research and education, you will use your experience in leading successful, diverse, and inclusive teams to support the other staff members in realizing theirs.

Job requirements
  • Motivated senior researcher, with a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry, or other relevant domain.
  • A fascination for science, technology, and academic education.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, demonstrated by high-quality and impactful output.
  • A proven capacity to attract competitive research funding.
  • A proven capacity to teach at all academic levels, and an informed vision on teaching and learning within your discipline.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring of students and staff, initiating, leading, and executing collaborative projects, and/or previous group chairing experience.
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work and thrive in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of a strong international network.
  • Excellent proficiency in English (written and verbal).

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station and city center. In addition, we offer you:

  • Free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, research and valorization competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • A gross monthly salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale HL2/HL1 (min. € 6648,- max. € 11686,-).
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • A tailored career proposal with the option of immediate tenure for qualified candidates.
  • A tailored start-up package to ensure a great start of your career here.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the partner career support program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program and sports facilities.
  • The opportunity to focus your career on education, research or impact. You can develop your personal ambitions and objections within the strategic objectives of the university.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as is - depending on your personal situation - a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility).
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
