The Department of the Built Environment houses a unique wide spectrum of disciplinary knowledge in the fields of architecture, urban planning and building technology (e.g. structural design, building physics, materials technology and building information modelling). We act at various levels of scale, from materials to buildings to cities and pay attention to the impact of design and technology on humans. This diversity profiles us, and we cherish it. Our mission is to educate students and advance science and technology from the perspective of the built environment and for the benefit of humanity. We integrate teaching, research and design in one educational program to empower students to become thought leaders, to (re)shape cities and the construction industry beyond the limits of the current imagination.

The department employs about 260 academic staff members, including approximately 190 PhDs, PDEngs and Postdocs, organized in disciplinary units. Scientists within the units are encouraged to team up over the borders of their own field of expertise in cross-disciplinary research and education on the themes: energy transition, sustainability and inclusiveness. Through cooperation with other departments in the TU/e institutes on Energy Transition (EIRES ), Artificial Intelligence (EAISI ) and the self-founded Urban Development Initiative (UDI ) we create new ecosystems with governmental agencies and industry and thereby contribute to a healthy, sustainable and inclusive built environment.

The Department of the Built Environment invites female applicants for a full professor position in Information Systems and Computing Science in the Built Environment (ISBE)

The newly appointed full professor is expected to hold a strong academic profile and be able to demonstrate excellence in the field of information systems in the Built Environment.

Moreover, we expect the newly appointed professor to initiate and maintain cross-over collaborations with the other (technological) subdisciplines in the department to preserve the rich tradition in cross-over collaborations of the department, both in education and research.
The newly appointed professor will be allocated in the Urban Systems and Real Estate unit (USRE) and is expected to force ties with the existing academic staff. We expect leadership skills that excels in supporting the development of talent, taking into account differences between disciplines, cultures and backgrounds that comes with an international oriented university. Finally, the professor is expected to participate, apart from research and education, in managerial tasks in the department.

Position of the ISBE chair within the USRE unit
The unit Urban Systems and Real Estate comprises three main focus areas, namely: Real Estate Management and Development, Urban Planning and Transportation, and Information Systems in the Built Environment. Together they constitute the Design and Decision Support Systems research program, with an outstanding international reputation. The three areas share a strong scientific background and a focus on model development to extend the knowledge and knowledge exchange on the interaction between the built environment and its inhabitants, both at the urban level and the architectural level. Within this academic field ISBE focus area takes the data and information modeling perspective. More specifically, ISBE contributes to the field Building Information Modeling and City Information Modeling to support communication and knowledge sharing in Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation.

ISBE has a long standing track record especially in the field of BIM. As part of the BIM/CIM research more recently real-time data are integrated to take advantage of the latest developments in the area of IoT devices for analyzing building/city performances and human behavior. For data processing new AI technology is utilized and extended. ISBE scientific knowledge is developed in response to societal demands such as climate change, CO2 reduction and building circularity. The quality of the ISBE research is evidenced by many publications in leading scientific journals.

Planned Research
The full professor supervises PhD's with subjects related to Building Information Modelling and City Information Modelling. The candidate writes research proposals to initiate new research projects and to extract external funding. Research results are published in international scientific journals. In case of funded research, she not only scientifically contributes to the project, but can also take responsibility for the management of the project. The research output is presented at international conferences and at professional meetings. A leading role is foreseen in the DDSS research program and a membership of the TUE-KPN flagship. To maintain and expand the leading position of the DDSS research program, the full professor is member of the scientific board of international research foundations and academic journals.

Educational visions
The full professor is responsible for an outstanding education vision, that connects scientific research with education. Currently, this includes course on Fundamentals in BIM, Collaborative Design and contributes in other courses with regard to BIM and CIM subjects. In the studios, bachelor students are guided on subjects related to CAD, ICT, Building Information Modelling and Geographic Information Systems. As part of the master program the full professor coordinates all education activities regarding Building Information Modelling and City Information Modelling.

Management and leadership skills
The full professor represents the ISBE chair in the research and education committees of the department of the Built Environment. The candidate is expected to have senior leadership skills and to work together with all colleagues within the department and beyond. She will  actively contribute to shaping the USRE unit, in line with the Built Environment Strategic Vision 2030. The DDSS Research program and the departmental unit USRE also require management tasks. Next to that, the candidate is expected to initiate activities that will contribute to the recognition of the Information Systems group of the department inside and outside the University.

Future Expectations
The full professor is expected to publish in leading scientific journals and at international conferences. Research funds are acquired for funding PhD students that are enrolled in the DDSS research program. She will participate in international research committees and national committees. She will mentor and lecture students that are enrolled in the Bachelor program Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences, in the Master program Architecture, Building and Planning, and the Master program Construction Management and Engineering offered by the TU/e.

Information Systems in the Built Environment involves methods and techniques from computing science to support communication between systems and services in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Planning, Construction and Operation. The candidate should meet the following requirements:

• Motivated researcher, with the ability to conduct high quality academic research that is demonstrated by a relevant PhD thesis and publications in high impact journals;
  • Experience in research on BIM/CIM and in ICT system design and development
  • Knowledge of semantic-web, IoT and AI technologies
  • Knowledge on open standards for communication between systems and services
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, aimed at developing people and creating synergy;
• Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills for managing professionals in your own research group and the overarching disciplinary unit;
• Personal experience with acquiring external research funding from (inter-) national funding bodies or industry;
• Extensive  education experience and proven didactic skills at both undergraduate and graduate level and experience in supervising PhD’s;
• Excellent proficiency in English, the teaching language at TU/e.
